A "Bee-Keeper" Review: The Girl in the Wall by Daphne Benedis-Grab

by Daphne Benedi-Grab
Release date: December 18th, 2012
Published by: Merit Press
Genre: Young Adult - Contemporary, Mystery, Suspense
Format read: ARC

SUMMARY

Ariel's birthday weekend looks to be the event of the season, with a private concert by rock star Hudson Winters on the grounds of her family's east coast estate, and all of Ariel's elite prep school friends in attendance. The only person who's dreading the party is Sera, Ariel's former best friend, whose father is forcing her to go. Sera has been the school pariah since she betrayed Ariel, and she now avoids Ariel and their former friends. Thrown together, Ariel and Sera can agree on one thing: this could be one very long night.

They have no idea just how right they are.

Only moments after the concert begins and the lights go down, thugs open fire on parents and schoolmates alike, in a plot against Ariel's father that quickly spins out of control. As the entire party is taken hostage, the girls are forced apart. Ariel escapes into the hidden tunnels in the family mansion, where she and Sera played as children. Only Sera, who forges an unlikely alliance with Hudson Winters, knows where her friend could be. As the industrial terrorist plot unravels and the death toll climbs, Ariel and Sera must recall the sisterhood that once sustained them as they try to save themselves and each other on the longest night of their lives.

MY REVIEW

Daphne Benedis-Grab really knows how to deliver a good dramatic plot full of nail-biting moments! The Girl in the Wall is told in alternating point-of-views between the main characters, Sera and Ariel. The story is fast paced, suspenseful and shocking!

It starts with Sera, who has been disowned by her best friend, Ariel, and everyone at school because she actually did something right. Even though Sera knew what the consequences were going to be, she knew that she couldn't ignore the warning signs anymore and had to do what she did. It's been really hard not having any friends for the last couple of months. But in her heart, she knows that if she had to do it all over again, she would. And that my friends, makes Sera a very strong and courageous character, a true friend.
Ariel was Sera's best friend since they were in grade school. Their families have known each other Not being a part of Sera's life has been difficult, but she knows how stubborn and spiteful Ariel can be, and wonders if Ariel will ever forgive her. Especially since Sera's father is forcing her to go to Ariel's 17th birthday party - the party of the year - hoping that Sera and Ariel will be able to mend their friendship.
So when Ariel's party starts off with a huge bang during Hunter's performance (literally) and the entire senior class is taken hostage and Ariel goes missing - Sera knows where Ariel is. Will Sera and Ariel be able to put their differences aside and trust each other to save everyone in time???

This book was the ultimate page-turner! The writing and plot are really good - I could picture the scenes in my mind perfectly. I would highly recommend it just for that. But, that's all it had. The characters and their chemistry felt flat to me. They weren't engaging enough. Their emotions did not reach me. They seemed mechanical most of the time. Maybe it was the situation that they were in - Sera couldn't exactly have a break down in front of the gunmen who would then find out how much Sera knew Ariel, Ariel's family and the house. And Ariel, who is in hiding, didn't exactly have time nor the place to dwell on her feelings to the situation. But the brief moments that they were allowed to show how they were truly feeling really lacked something. Also, the relationship between Ariel and Hunter didn't click for me. To me, he was just a guy that was there, who helped and that was it. Could have been any other guy. Not a memorable supportive character - and those are usually the characters that I look for and tend to fall in love with. And then the other supportive character that I did like, was around enough... and the ending, well, it hurt me. I would have liked to have had more of a bittersweet ending...
Also, what Sera did to Ariel - through a teens eyes, I can understand the hurt and betrayal that Ariel must have felt. And she had every right to be angry. But to take it to the max and turn the entire school against Sera just seemed wrong, and unrealistic to me. There has to be at least one or two people who would have understood and sympathized with Sera, right?!
And the violence - I understand that this was a hostage situation and that things happen. But for me, personally, there was just too much of it. The methods that were used were just so cold-hearted... I just don't know. As a mom, I just wasn't comfortable with it.

Overall, if you're looking for a suspenseful quick read, this is definitely one for you to jump on.
But I will say this again, I truly believe that this is a book for a more mature teens and up.

Waiting On Wednesday #42: Life After Theft by Aprilynne Pike

"Waiting On Wednesday" is a weekly meme hosted by  Breaking the Spine.
This is were we get to 'spotlight' books that we are anxiously waiting to be released! The ones that we are dying to get our hands on and read into the wee hours of the night and, quite possibly, to make our shelves look all pretty too :)

What I'm waiting on...

by Aprilynne Pike
Expected release date: April 30th, 2013
Published by: Harper Teen
Genre: Young Adult

SUMMARY

Moving to a new high school sucks. Especially a rich-kid private school. With uniforms. But nothing is worse than finding out the first girl you meet is dead. And a klepto.

No one can see or hear Kimberlee except Jeff, so - in hopes of bringing an end to the snarkiest haunting in history - he agrees to help her complete her "unfinished business." But when the enmity between Kimberlee and Jeff's new crush, Sera, manages to continue posthumously, Jeff wonders if he's made the right choice.

Why I'm waiting on 'Life After Theft'...

I really loved Aprilynne Pike's Wing Series -
I will read anything by her now!

I love the twist...
"finding out the first girl you meet is dead. And a klepto."
LOLing!

This is suppose to be a modern-day retelling of The Scarlet Pimpernel by Baroness Emmuska Orczy.
I have never read The Scarlet Pimpernel... but now I want to ;) And before Life After Theft is released!

Can't wait!!!

What are you waiting for this week?!?!

Blog Tour: "The INDIGO AWAKENING World" A GUEST POST by Jordan Dane AND Giveaway!

I am super excited to be a part of INDIGO AWAKENING's blog tour
with Kismet Book Tours today!

Prepare yourself to catch a glimpse of an author's brain (Jordan Dane)
and how she created INDIGO AWAKENING and THE HUNTER'S Series world!!!

"The Indigo Awakening World"

Welcome to the inside of my author brain.
Just shove aside my Prefrontal Cortex and have a seat. Can I get you a beverage? If you want a taste of how the Indigo Awakening world began, you have to think like an author.

This is a normal human brain.

Below is an author brain. You’ll notice there is plenty of space for story conjuring.

The major inspiration behind Indigo Awakening came from my research of Indigo children. Query “Indigo Child” on the Internet and you’ll get over 8 million hits. Real life and headlines often inspire my books and this time is no exception. Conspiracy theorists have linked the CIA, the UN, and the Pentagon to the phenomenon known as Indigo or Crystal children. For the purposes of fiction, I took liberties in my portrayal of this phenomenon, but Indigo kids are generally described as highly intelligent, gifted teen psychics with a bright "indigo" aura and a mission to save the world. They have high IQs, have been known to see angels and commune with the dead. Because they are frequently misunderstood, they are diagnosed by therapists and doctors as having attention deficit or behavioral disorders and are often medicated.

Are Indigo children real or are they manipulated by adults to believe their sensitivities are special? Are they dysfunctional misfits or saviors who must be respected as the next evolution of mankind? You decide, but I find the notion of man’s evolution very intriguing.

So the most important question in a writer’s arsenal is “what if.” What if Indigo kids are the next evolution and their psychic abilities are evolving and escalating? Who would fear this and feel threatened? I had to have a larger than life villain with a universal reach to terrorize these children. (Yeah, that’s how authors think.) The Church of Spiritual Freedom (specifically, a covert operation of overzealous “Believers”) use their faith as justification to persecute those they fear, believing God is on their side. They fear that Indigos and Crystal children threaten humanity’s existence with their “unnatural” superiority. That’s the basic conflict, a David versus Goliath storyline, but I also like to have images of settings in my mind while I’m writing so I can be “in” the scenes and put the reader there too.

Much of the initial action in the book takes place in West Hollywood and the Sunset strip. LA is amazing. What are some of my impressions and real locations that made it into the book? Pink’s Hot Dogs, the vibe of Sunset Strip, tall palm trees lining the freeways, the Viper Room (renamed the Copperhead Club), the LA County Museum of Art that looks like a human spine, Griffith Park, the abandoned LA Zoo, and the Bristol Mountains (east of LA) where the fictional Stewart Estate is located.

This is the image I thought of when I wrote about the Stewart Estate. This particular picture is of the Lichtenstein Castle in Germany. I also like the mansion used on the CW TV show Arrow, but the fanciful oddities of the Lichtenstein castle is AMAZING.

In every author brain, there are dark and scary recesses. While I researched what setting I wanted for Indigo Awakening, I found out that there are eleven miles of below ground passages under downtown LA. That sold me. These tunnels are a maze of abandoned railroad tracks, vehicle overpasses through foothills, or secret passages built during the time of Prohibition to transport illegal alcohol. Hollywood types shoot movies in some of them, like the Matrix. But in this scary dark setting, the Indigo children find safety and a home, thanks to one of their own, Kendra Walker. She creates an oasis beyond the prying eyes of those who wouldn’t understand how they live.
Another key location in LA is the spot where Rayne Darby finds a mysterious runaway, Gabriel Stewart, when she’s searching for her brother, Lucas. Griffith Park and the abandoned LA Zoo were an uber cool place for me to discover and I had to have them in the book. Here are some pics I used of the real location:

The Indigo Awakening world starts with real life and research, but once the author’s mind takes over, the Indigo world will hopefully trigger the imagination of the reader. After all, reading is an adventure and calisthenics for the brain, right?

by Michelle Madow

Published by: Dreamscape Publishing
Genre: Young Adult - Romance

SUMMARY

IT'S A RACE AGAINST TIME.

In Remembrance, Lizzie and Drew changed the course of fate so they could be together.

In Vengeance, Chelsea set fate back on its original, deadly path.

Now, strange things keep happening to Lizzie. Things that are omens of darkness to come. A curse has doomed her to die an early death, just as she did in her past life.
To make things worse, even if she can figure out who cast the curse, it's irreversible.
There's only one option left for her to save herself. It's crazier than anything she's heard yet, and to do it, she'll need Drew and Chelsea's help.

Because to make things right, they must go back to when it all began...

BOOK TRAILER - Timeless by Michelle Madow

MY REVIEW

Timeless holds all of my favorite parts to the story!
Michelle Madow did an outstanding job with the conclusion to the series...

*Spoiler Free!*

There is no time to spare in Timeless... the story picks up immediately after Remembrance -
Lizzie and Drew are able to soak in their blissful state for about 2 minutes before Lizzie realizes that something isn't right. Odd things keep happening to her. Dark things.
It seems that Lizzie and Drew are not destined for their happily-ever-after yet!
It doesn't take them long to realize who is behind their misfortune; and if they had the time to dwell on it  and be angry about it, they would! But time is ticking and the thing that they most feared can happen at any moment. They must find a way to reverse what is happening before it's too late!

I loved everything about Timeless!
The characters grow and mature so much: Lizzie and Drew's relationship blooms in strength and trust. Chelsea's character, no matter all the wrong's she did, I liked her even more this time around! She really comes into her own, thinks fast and really pulls through in the end - which is something rare to happen in stories.

The plot really picks up and moves along smoothly - Madow's writing and style gets better and better. I am really looking forward to seeing what she will be writing about next!

The Transcend Time Saga is truly a 'timeless' love story not to be forgotten!

You can see my review on REMEMBRANCE and VENGEANCE right here!

ABOUT THE AUTHOR - Michelle Madow

Michelle Madow was inspired to write Remembrance after seeing Taylor Swift's "Love Story" music video while a junior at Rollins College in Winter Park, FL. The song and video gave her the story idea about a high school girl reincarnated from Regency Era, England. She handed in the first chapter as a homework assignment for class, and when her teacher and fellow classmates wanted her to continue writing, she decided to go for it. By the end of the school year, her first novel was completed!

Along with the Transcend Time Saga, Michelle Madow has written two other young adult novels, both which will be developed into series'.

Michelle Madow graduated from the Park School of Baltimore in 2005, where she always took two English classes each semester. She graduated from Rollins College in 2010, cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts in English. At Rollins she was a memeber of the National Society of Collegiate Schollars, and a member of the International English Honor Society Sigma Tau Delta.

She received the Charles Hyde Pratt Award for Excellence in Creative Writing in 2010.

Michelle lives in Florida, where she is hard at work writing more novels for young adults.

My Happy New Year 2013 Reading, Blogging and more Goals!

Happy New Year!!!
I hope all of you had a wonderful night :)

It's January 1st, that means that most of us are thinking about what we would like to accomplish this year!

MY LIFE GOALS

So my 'little word' for 2013 is: Harmony
There comes a time in ones life where you have to just sit back and accept most things - for some, that may sound like I would be settling, but believe me, I most certainly not. It's time to stop worrying so much, stop stressing and go with the flow. Having two growing boys running about takes a lot of energy and patience - I must learn to pick and choose my battles ;)
It's also time for me to get things organized - not only in my closets and bookshelves, but in my life too. I must come to terms that I'm another year older, definitely not getting younger, lol! Must prioritize and come to terms that certain things need to be squared away like budgets, wills, etc. It sucks getting old, but I want to learn to embrace the good parts of it, relax (harmonize!) rather than dwell on the negatives and enjoy every second of it to the fullest!!!

MY BLOG GOALS

Last year, being that it was my first year of BOOK-blogging, it was all about 'trial and error'! Lots of different things happened here on the blog and it took a while to figure out what was best -
what meme's to feature? More cover reveals, or less? Book blitz's, yay or nay???
But towards the very end of the year, I feel like I found a good groove and schedule. However, I want to expand on it. Obviously, I want to post more reviews! I would like to do more of my own features too and have created a schedule...

Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays: Reviews and Blog Tours
Wednesdays: Waiting On Wednesdays
Fridays: Novella/Short Story Reviews (NEW!) AND #FridayReads
Saturdays: The Beehive Book News (Updates, Recaps and Book hauls)
Sundays: The Bumble Girl's Book Confessions (NEW!)
AND...
Every 1st of the month: My TBR list for the month (NEW!)
Every last day of the month: My wrap-up for the month (NEW!)

MY READING GOALS

- I want to read what I want to read! It's going to be hard to choose, but I have a lot of dusty books on my shelf that I want to get to AND I want to make sure that I'm still enjoying myself! After all, this is a hobby and not a job, and I really want to keep it that way :) I did manage to read 120 books last year, so this year, I'm aiming for 100. But I don't want to worry about reaching it, if I do, then I do ;)

2013 Reading Challenge

2013 Reading Challenge
The Bumble Girl has read 0 books toward her goal of 100 books.
hide

- I am looking forward to reading more middle grade books this year! For ever 3 young adult (or adult) books I read, I want to read at least one middle grade book ;)
My oldest son is really into reading, and my youngest is almost getting into chapter books - I really want to enjoy this reading time with them, hold on to it for as long as I can since there is a possibility that once they're teens/adults they a) may not enjoy the same genres as I do anymore or b) {gasp!} may not love books as much as they do now - hope that this may never be the case. But with boys, you never know, lol!

- I am really excited to start on all the reading challenges I have decided to participate in:

*2013 TBR Pile Challenge

With this challenge, I want to at least read 12 older books off of my own shelf in 2013!

*2013 Dusty Bookshelf Challenge
hosted by Books: A True Story
With this challenge, I am want to at least read 12 'dusty books' off my shelf in 2013!

*2013 Stand Alone Reading Challenge
hosted by I Like These Books and Icey Books
With this challenge, I want to read 15 'stand alone' YA or MG books in 2013!

*2013 Debut Author Challenge
hosted by Hobbitsies
With this challenge, I want to read at least 12 Debut MG/YA books in 2013!

*All About Middle Grade Challenge
With this challenge, I want to read at least 12 Middle Grade books in 2013!

And that's it for now, lol!
I'm sure a few things may get tweaked here and there as the year goes one -
but I'm quite happy and confident with what I have prepared so far :)

SO, what are your resolutions, plans and/or goals for 2013???
