Blog Tour (Excerpt, Review and Giveaway): FLUNKED (Fairytale Reform School #1) by Jen Calonita (MG)

FLUNKED
Fairytale Reform School #1
by Jen Calonita
Release date:
Published by Sourcebooks Jabberwocky
Genre: Middle Grade Fairytale
Format: Hardcover, eBook, Audiobook
Format read: eARC from the publisher.

SUMMARY

OUR MISSION:
To turn WICKED DELINQUENTS
and FORMER VILLAINS
into FUTURE HEROES

Gilly wouldn’t call herself wicked exactly… but when you have five little brothers and sisters and live in a run- down boot, you have to get creative to make ends meet. Gilly’s a pretty good thief (if she does say so herself).
Until she gets caught.
Gilly’s sentenced to three months at Fairy Tale Reform School- where all of the teachers are former (super-scary) villains like the Big Bad Wolf, the Evil Queen, and Cinderella’s Wicked Stepmother. Harsh. But when she meets fellow students Jax and Kayla, she learns there’s more to this school than its heroic mission. There’s a battle brewing and Gilly has to wonder: can a villain really change?

EXCERPT

There’s a boy up there, standing on the crystal chandelier! He has slightly curly blond hair and is wearing a uniform—a navy sweater vest over a white shirt with khaki pants—but his boots are muddy. He’s stepping on priceless crystals with cruddy boots? Is he insane?

“Jax! What are you doing up there?” Kayla whispers heatedly.

“I’m cleaning the crystal for Flora,” Jax says and rolls his eyes. “What does it look like I’m doing? I’m making a break for it.”

Kayla applauds. “Yay! This time I know you can do it.”

I shade my eyes from the light bursting through the stained-glass window next to the chandelier Jax is perched on. “Busting out? Why?” I ask Kayla. “I thought you said this place was cool.”

Jax laughs loudly and looks at me. I feel slightly stunned. I’ve never seen violet eyes before. “FTRS was fun for a while, but strange things have started happening and I don’t want to be here when something bad goes down.”

Strange things? What kind of strange things? Why does Kayla suddenly look pale?

“He’s exaggerating,” Kayla tells me, but she doesn’t sound convincing.

Drip. Whatever Jax is holding is leaking. Kayla and I move out of the way so we don’t get wet. “Grease,” Jax explains to me. “It lubes the window.” He swings the chandelier, and as it nears the window, he uses a fork to try to pry the window open. “A few more tries and I’ll have it.”

“Then what are you going to do, genius?” I ask. “You’re two stories up.”

Jax’s eyes gleam. “I’ve jumped from higher spots before.”

“It’s true,” Kayla says to me. “Jax once jumped from the gym to the dining hall turret. That was three stories up. We call him the Escape Artist. One time he even managed to break into Azalea and Dahlia’s rooms and borrowed their keys to the indoor pool so the whole dorm could take a midnight swim.”

“Impressive,” I tell him. “And I thought I was good at tricking obnoxious royals.”

“She stole a dragon’s tooth clip from one this morning,” Kayla fills him in.

“Nice,” Jax says. “Your first pull?”

“No, I’ve been doing it for a while,” I brag.

“Me too,” Jax says. “My father is a farmer. You can only get so far trading vegetables. I needed to kick things up a notch.”

For some reason, I don’t think any of us are going to make the transformation Headmistress Flora is looking for. “Why do you want to break out so bad?”

“I’ve got places to see, and Enchantasia isn’t one of them.” Jax swings the chandelier so hard the crystals clang together. The window latch pops open, and I watch Jax leap from the chandelier to the tiny window ledge. I’m in awe. Jax looks down at us smugly before pushing open the window. “Are you sure you two don’t want to join me?”

“There’s no time for us,” Kayla says. “Get out of here. Wait!” Her eyes widen. “You deactivated the alarm on the window, right?”

“There isn’t one,” Jax insists. “If there was, I wouldn’t be able to do this.” But when Jax lifts the window, we hear:

EEEEEE! EEEE! EEEE! Unauthorized exit! Unauthorized exit!

The shrieking sound is so intense that Kayla and I cover our ears. Within seconds, Flora is out of her office and running toward us.

Swoosh!

I feel something brush past me and I whirl around. When I look up at Jax again, a large, muscular man with a long mane of hair is hanging on to the window ledge, his furry hands pulling Jax back by his shirt. How did the man get up there without a ladder?

“Mr. Jax,” the man says in a low growl, “we really must stop meeting like this.”

MY REVIEW

Amusing, witty and full of magic - FLUNKED has a wonderful assortment of fairytales and their characters, most notably, their villains. A wonderful book that will make you think about what defines the good from the bad, giving second chances and who your true friends are.

Gilly is a 12 year old who has developed a Robin Hood complex due to her father's dying shoemaking business. She steals from the nobles in order to help put food in her siblings bellies and smiles on their faces. One of six siblings who live in a shoe, Gilly has brought it onto herself to take the risks to do what she can. She knows that if she is caught she will be sent to Fairytale Reform School and her siblings will suffer.
When Gilly pulls off her biggest heist to date, she is completely unaware of the trail she leaves behind until she is caught. Having to see the disappointment on her families faces is hard, but being sent away to school is even worse. Who will help and look after her siblings.

Fairytale Reform School was founded by the reformed "Wicked Stepmother", Flora. After realizing how badly she mistreated Ella, Flora decided to change her ways and what better way to complete the process than to extend a hand to others who have done wrong and help them find a way to better themselves. After reforming these "villains", she recruited them to do something worthy with themselves within society and asked them to join her faculty at the school. A few of these memorable characters are - the Werewolf that ate Little Red's grandmother, the Sea Witch and the Evil Queen, who is still obsessed with apples.
The school itself resembles a castle - with ornate rooms and furniture, and nothing is lacking. Gilly's classes and meals are better than anything else she's ever had in her life. She feels guilty for not being able to take care of her siblings, but also, for living better than them too.
However, strange things have been happening at the school. Unexplained disappearances and teachers and students acting differently... something is happening. And Gilly and her friends are going to find out what it is.

What I love most about this book is Gilly's personality, she is very strong-minded and not only sticks up for what she believes in but for others too. She won't tolerate any type of bullying towards anyone and is very loyal to what and who she believes in. Gilly is definitely someone you can count on. Her new friends all fit an important role in her life and situation. There is a little magic here and there, but by all means, this is no fairytale where magic fixes everything and things are swept away with a swish of a wand. Everyone has to work hard and your best is always expected.

The story is wonderfully written and told strictly from Gilly's point of view, primarily through conversations and her thoughts. We see and know precisely what Gilly does without unnecessary details, which is exactly what my boys enjoy.

Fun, sassy and bold - we cannot wait to read the next book in this series! One of the best middle grade books of this year!

*I received an eARC from the publisher for an honest review. All thoughts are my own.

Waiting On Wednesday #116: VALIANT by Sarah McGuire (MG)

"Waiting On Wednesday" is a weekly meme hosted by Breaking the Spine.

This is where we get to 'spotlight' books that we are anxiously waiting to be released!!!
The ones that we are dying to get our hands on and read into the wee hours of the night!!!
And, quite possibly, to make our shelves look pretty too :)

What I'm currently waiting for...

by Sarah McGuire
Expected release date: June 9th, 2015
Published by: Egmont USA
Genre: Middle Grade Fairytale Retelling
Format: Hardcover, eBook

SUMMARY

A debut fairy tale retelling featuring a strong female character and a daring quest just right for fans of Shannon Hale, Jessica Day George, and Gail Carson Levine.

Saville despises the bolts of velvet and silk that her father loves- he's always prized them more than he's ever loved her. Yet when he's struck ill, she'll do anything to survive, even donning boys' clothes and begging a commission to sew for the king.

Piecing together a fine coat is far simpler than unknotting court gossip about an army of giants led by a man who cannot be defeated. And they're marching toward Reggen to seize the throne. But Saville knows giants are just stories, and no man is immortal.

Then she meets them, two scouts as tall as trees. She tricks them into leaving, but tales of the daring tailor's triumph quickly spin into impossible feats of giant-slaying. And mere stories won't deter the Duke and his larger-than-life army.

Now only a courageous and clever tailor girl can see beyond the rumors to save the kingdom again.

Valiant richly reimagines "The Brave Little Tailor," transforming it into a story of understanding, identity, and fighting to protect those you love most.

Why I'm waiting for VALIANT...

Firstly... it is a fairytale retelling of THE BRAVE LITTLE TAILOR!!!
Who doesn't remember watching Disney's 1938 short film starring Mickey Mouse?! As a child, I used to watch it over and over again :) Luckily for me, my dad and sister enjoyed it as well!
However, the original fairytale is called THE VALIANT LITTLE TAILOR, a German fairytale written by the Brothers Grimm. Obviously this version is a bit darker than the Mickey one. I am very curious to see what direction the author has decided to go with her version...

Secondly... that cover!!!
I'm not a fan of the color purple, but, this works so perfectly for the theme of this book!!!

Lastly... the writing is being compared to some heavy hitters - how can I not give this debut a try!!!

SO, what are you waiting for???

You know things are going to suck when you’re the new kid. But when you’re the new kid and a vampire… well, it bites!

Unlike most kids, Scarlet Small’s problems go far beyond just trying to fit in. She would settle for a normal life, but being twelve years old for an entire century is a real pain in the neck. Plus, her appetite for security guards, house pets and bloody toms (tomato juice) is out of control. So in order to keep their vampire-secret, her parents, Mort and Drac, resort to moving for the hundredth time, despite Scarlet being dead-set against it. Things couldn’t be worse at her new school, either. Not only does she have a strange skeleton-girl as a classmate, but a smelly werewolf is intent on revealing her secret. When she meets Granny — who fills her with cookies, goodies, and treats, and seems to understand her more than anyone — she’s sure things will be different. But with a fork-stabbing incident, a cherry pie massacre, and a town full of crazy people, Scarlet’s O-positive she’ll never live to see another undead day.

Not even her Vampire Rule Book can save her from the mess she’s in.

GUEST POST

Thanks for having us here on your blog, Margie! I'm so excited about the release of my second book, LITTLE DEAD RIDING HOOD, co-authored by my daughter, Bethanie! Today is the official release day and I'm just beside myself with glee. It's FANGtastic!

We've been asked to talk about the ups and downs of writing together. I believe this is a trick question because I haven't seen any real downfalls to our writing relationship, though I'm sure Bethanie would state otherwise.

Here's five reasons why I think writing with my daughter is an awesome experience:
1) She's super creative. Her ideas always seem to take things to a whole. nother.level!
2) She's funny. Bethanie has a natural ability to summon a laugh from her audience.
3) Bethanie is a hard worker. A few weeks ago she churned out over 8,000 words in an afternoon. It would take me an entire week to write that many words!
4) She sees the possibility and potential. She's able to connect plot twists and delve into characterization with ease.
5) She's insightful. She knows that the words need to be put on the page first before they can be edited. I'm the opposite. I tend to be a perfectionist and want perfect words, sentences, and paragraphs the first time around. She is the one that reminds me that we can't perfect what isn't written.

If I had to come up with five downfalls of working together they would be:
1) Time. Bethanie is homeschooled AND training for the Olympics in archery. If we had to wait for time to write together, we'd never get anything written. So although we plot together, we tend to write independently. Bethanie will email me what she's written and I incorporate it into our manuscript. We discuss plot, characterization, and story development when we're driving to various activities. If we need time to delve into something deeper we squeeze it in on the weekends.
2) Bethanie's a fast writer. I have a hard time keeping up and sometimes fall behind, which makes me feel bad, like I'm not pulling my weight.
3) Not agreeing. It's rare, but sometimes we don't agree on a plot point, or how to implement it.
4) Bethanie says that one of the hardest things for her is that because we're family she feels as though she can procrastinate if I'm not reminding her to get her writing done.
5) She's always right. That's a hard pill to swallow when you're the parent!

Thanks for having us here today, Margie!
THANK YOU, Amie, for stopping by today!!!

Waiting On Wednesday #102: MONSTROUS by MarcyKate Connolly (MG)

"Waiting On Wednesday" is a weekly meme hosted by  Breaking the Spine.

What I'm waiting for...

by MarcyKate Connolly
Expected release date: February 10th, 2015
Published by: HarperCollins Children's Books
Genre: Middle Grade Fantasy
Format: Hardback, eBook

SUMMARY

The city of Bryre suffers under the magic of an evil wizard. Because of his curse, girls sicken and disappear without a trace, and Bryre’s inhabitants live in fear. No one is allowed outside after dark.

Yet night is the only time that Kymera can enter this dangerous city, for she must not be seen by humans. Her father says they would not understand her wings, the bolts in her neck, or her spiky tail—they would kill her. They would not understand that she was created for a purpose: to rescue the girls of Bryre.

Despite her caution, a boy named Ren sees Kym and begins to leave a perfect red rose for her every evening. As they become friends, Kym learns that Ren knows about the missing girls, the wizard, and the evil magic that haunts Bryre.

And what he knows will change Kym’s life.

Reminiscent of Frankenstein and the tales of the Brothers Grimm, this debut novel by Marcy Kate Connolly stands out as a compelling, original story that has the feel of a classic.
