'you don't ask the writer. You ask the reader."

Review: WINK POPPY MIDNIGHT by April Genevieve Tucholke (YA)

by April Genevieve Tucholke
Release date: March 22nd, 2016
Published by: Dial Books (Penguin Random House)
Genre: Young Adult Contemporary
Format: Hardcover, eBook, Audiobook
Format read: ARC acquired from a book blogger friend.

SUMMARY

Every story needs a hero.
Every story needs a villain.
Every story needs a secret.

Wink is the odd, mysterious neighbor girl, wild red hair, and freckles.
Poppy is the blond bully and the beautiful, manipulative high school queen bee.
Midnight is the sweet, uncertain boy caught between them.
Wink. Poppy. Midnight.
Two girls.
One boy.
Three voices that burst onto the page in short, sharp, bewitching chapters, and spiral swiftly and inexorably toward something terrible or tricky or tremendous.

What really happened?
Someone knows.
Someone is lying.

MY REVIEW

*An ARC (Advanced Reader Copy) was acquired from a book blogger friend for free to read and review. All thoughts here are my very own.

This book has my brain all jumbled up! It was whimsical, addicting and... everything that you would want in a book that will leave you feeling overwhelmed and confused in such a good way... I'm advising you now, when you pick up this book, be prepared to be sucked in until the end. This is not a book that you could/should read in spurts or while reading other books. This book will demand your undivided attention and you should not go against it!

Wink, Poppy and Midnight are our three main characters and the story is told from all of their point-of-views... there is a love triangle here, BUT, it is not like anything you have probably read before. Their story is so complicated and full of unexpected twists and turns, revelations and more. No one who is who you think they are and then they are and then they're not again. Their story is full of manipulation, and puzzling thoughts... they're not here to make friends with you, to get you to connect with them and sympathize; they're here to tell a story, their story.

Wink is the new girl next door who believes in fairytales and feels that life should be lived like one, and feels that Midnight is the hero to her story.

Poppy is purposely the villain. She admittedly has a black heart and enjoys playing with peoples emotions and their lives. And will do anything to claim what is hers and put people in their rightful place. Midnight is hers and she will play along, or until she grows bored.

And, Midnight. Midnight is our lost boy who is in love with two girls who may be exactly who he thinks they are and also knows that he doesn't. He's torn between the two, but he also has his own story to tell.

THE WRITING! Oh, my goodness - the writing is AMAZING! It is flawless and lyrical; some passages are so captivating and realistic. For me, while reading, I felt like I was there seeing everything first hand, smelling the strawberries and barn, feeling the sheets and the grass between my toes, seeing the dust and cobwebs. It is quite eerie the way the magic of Tucholke's writing had on me.

I highly recommend this book to those who want a quick read to fall into for a while and get lost in, to then take some time to find a way to climb out of. For those who love honest complex characters, mysteries and a mind-boggling experience.

Waiting On Wednesday: BROKEN THINGS by Lauren Oliver

"Waiting On Wednesday" is a weekly meme that used to be hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine

Waiting On Wednesday is where I/we get to "spotlight" the books that we are most looking forward to reading soon!

Today's pick is...

by Lauren Oliver
Expected release date: October 2nd, 2018
Published by: Harper Collins
Genre: Young Adult Contemporary Mystery/Thriller
Format: Hardcover, eBook

SUMMARY

It's been five years since Summer Marks was brutally murdered in the woods.

Everyone thinks Mia and Brynn killed their best friend.
That driven by their obsessions with a novel called THE WAY INTO LOVELORN, the three girls had imagined themselves into the magical world where their fantasies became twisted, even deadly.

The only thing is: they didn't do it.

On the anniversary of Summer's death, a seemingly insignificant discovery resurrects the mystery and pulls Mia and Brynn back together once again. But as the lines begin to blur between past and present and fiction and reality, the girls must confront what really happened in the woods all those years ago - no matter how monstrous.

MY THOUGHTS

If you've been following me for a while, you know how much of a fan I am of Lauren Oliver's books and writing... I'll add a pic of my Lauren Oliver shelf down below for you to see the proof ;)

I see that on Goodreads BROKEN THINGS has been labeled as a Young Adult book. However, I was under the impression that this was an Adult rating because, first, this takes place five years after their friend was killed, making me feel that these girls may be in the New Adult genre?... and, since it is being released directly under Harper Collins and not from one of their Young Adult imprints...???

Key phrases that has me super excited to read this as soon as it is released (unless, by some miracle, I can get/borrow an ARC copy, please!)

- "Everyone thinks Mia and Brynn killed their best friend."
- "... the three girls imagined themselves into a magical world..."
- "The only thing is: they didn't do it."
- "... no matter how monstrous."

What do you think???

What are you anxious to get your hands on soon???

Waiting On Wednesday: BLANCA & ROJA by Anna-Marie McLemore (YA)

"Waiting On Wednesday" is a weekly meme that used to be hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine. I've missed posting these on a weekly basis and have decided to start doing them again.
Waiting On Wednesday is where I/we get to "spotlight" the books that we are most looking forward to reading soon!

Today's pick is...

by Anna-Marie McLemore
Expected release date: October 9th, 2018
Published by: Feiwel & Friends (Macmillan)
Genre: Young Adult Fairytale Retellings/Magical Realism
Format: Hardcover, eBook, Audiobook

SUMMARY

The biggest lie of all is the story you think you already know.

The del Cisne girls have never just been sisters; they're also rivals, Blanca as obedient and graceful as Roja is vicious and manipulative. They know that, because of a generations-old spell, their family is bound to a bevy of swans deep in the woods. They know that, one day, the swans will pull them into a dangerous game that will leave one of them a girl, and trap the other in the body of a swan.

But when two local boys become drawn into the game, the swans' spell intertwines with the strange and unpredictable magic lacing the woods, and all four of their fates depend on facing truths that could either save or destroy them.

Blanca & Roja is the captivating story of sisters, friendship, love, hatred, and the price we pay to protect our hearts.

MY THOUGHTS

First of all, it's another Anna-Marie McLemore book.
Do I really need to convince you as to why I need this book ASAP?!?!?

Okay then...

It's a SNOW WHITE AND ROSE RED and SWAN LAKE retelling!!!

You all know how I feel about fairy tales, retellings, and magical realism!

Key phrases that are making me all jumpy and SO excited to read this:
- "... generations-old spell..."
- "... a dangerous game that will leave one of them a girl, and trap the other in the body of a swan."
- "... magic lacing the woods..."
- "... the price we pay to protect our hearts."

Just rip my heart out now and give me this book!!!

Is this book on your list too???
What are you currently waiting for???
