EXCERPT

Most of the crowd had dispersed. The final few stragglers looked at me with the alltoo-common look of fear mixed with trepidation. Pix ’em. They were just servants. It wasn’t like their opinion mattered.

Only one remained, watching me with open curiosity. He looked to be in his late teens or was magically enhanced to appear so. He could have been a hundred for all I knew. I’d never seen him before in my life. He was handsome enough, for a commoner, even in his worn leather pants and cracked work boots. A foreigner, his hair was unruly and dark auburn, which complemented his tanned but dirt-smudged complexion, though the tall, dark stranger vibe was ruined by his piercing pale blue eyes.

Well, I’d had enough of being a sideshow for the day. “If you’re the new gardener, the hedges are overgrown and in need of a trim.” I pointed in the direction of my father. “While you’re there, you can help the king with the wisps.”

The young man’s expression clouded over, but he didn’t move.

I stamped my foot and pointed more forcefully. “Off with you. Courtyard’s that way. Be sure to clean those awful boots before coming back in.”

“Someone told me I’d find a princess of great worth here. One with the strength to be the hero this realm needs.” He stared at me with those unsettling blue eyes. They were cold, like ice water—made me shiver from head to toe. Then his gaze seemed to search even deeper. Finally, he looked through me, like I was nothing.

In brisk steps, he strode across the marble to the courtyard. But before crossing the threshold, he turned back to glare at me with his lip curled ever so slightly. “It seems she was mistaken.”

Just like that, I had been sifted, weighed, and found wanting.

I felt my own lip curl in response. How rude! Who the Grimm was this peasant to judge me? I was wearing a Glenda original. Original! Not some fairy-godmother knockoff worn by those servant girls turned royal. I was a crown princess, for the love of fairy, and no one dismissed me.

Before I could put the boy in his place—down in the dirt, where he belonged—a clatter came from behind, making me nearly jump out of my shoes. I checked and was relieved that Sterling had simply dropped his sword. By the time I looked back, the gardener was gone.

After stowing his blade, Sterling held up his shield, not in defense of the entrance but so he could look at his reflection. “Clearly he’s blind and doesn’t know what he’s talking about.”

I didn’t ask for Sterling’s opinion, but it made me feel better.

Until he opened his mouth again.

“Worth, pffft. I mean, look around at all the jewels. Your palace has everything you could ever want. Honestly, I don’t know what you’re fussing about. Why would anyone want to leave?”

Because a cage is still a cage, no matter how big or glittering the bars are. And I would find a way free, no matter the cost.

EXCERPT

“Charlotte.”
“What?”
“I’m sorry.”
“I’m not sure which of the thousand things you’ve done wrong you’re sorry for now and I doubt you know either, in this state.”
The elevator opened on his floor and I got his arm over my shoulder again as we struggled our way to his door.
“Where’s your card?” I said.
He opened his eyes for only a second. “What?”
I shoved him against the door and started the lovely task of searching his pockets. Of course he couldn’t be the kind of person who wore their card on a lanyard. I didn’t either, but I always kept my card in my back left pocket.
He watched me while I searched, finding it in his back pocket. I tried really hard not to think about where my hands were going, and that only a little bit of fabric separated my hand from his skin and other things.
I moved him to lean against the wall and slid the key card into the door before opening it as slowly as I could. There was enough light from the hallway to see that his roommate’s bed was empty and I breathed a sigh of relief as I turned the light on.
One side of the room was a disaster. Clothes and cans and random crap everywhere. The other side was orderly and sparse. I figured that was the Zan side. I got him in and sort of shoved so he fell onto the bed, banging his head on the wall.
“Ow,” he moaned.
“Shut up,” I hissed. My brother and Simon were on the other side of that wall, and they were the absolute last people I wanted to find out about this little adventure.
“‘We are the mirror as well as the face in it,” he muttered, opening and closing his eyes. “‘We are tasting the taste this minute of eternity.’” I swung his feet up on the bed and started yanking his shoes off. “‘We are pain and what cures pain, both. We are the sweet cold water and the jar that pours.’”
How the hell he was with it enough to quote poetry but barely able to walk, was beyond me.
“Charlotte?”
“What?” I finally jimmied his shoes off and chucked them on the floor. I guessed it didn’t matter if he slept in his clothes, because I sure as hell wasn’t undressing him.
“I’m sorry.”
“You don’t know what you’re saying.” He tried to sit up, but I shoved him back down. “Just shut up and stay here. I’m going to get you some water.”
He nodded and stayed put. I peered out into the hallway and dashed as fast as I could to the bathroom and back with a glass I’d found on his desk. I didn’t really care if it was dirty or not. He wouldn’t know the difference.
Zan was on his side when I came back.
“Here,” I said, shoving the water at him. He took it, but his hand was wobbly, so I held it for him as he sipped.
There, I’d done something good for my karma. That was it, I was done.
“Charlotte?”
“WHAT?!” I snapped before I realized how loud my voice was. Shit. I clapped my hand over my mouth, as if I’d screamed a curse word in church.
“I’m Boo Radley.”
“You’re what?” He sort of slurred it, so I wasn’t absolutely sure that was what he said. What did Boo Radley have to do with anything?
“I’m Boo Radley.” His eyes closed and he went limp on the bed.

SUMMARY

When Seraphina was younger, she healed her best friend's injured hand. Terrified by the inexplicable cure, the girl shunned her. From that day on, Seraphina found herself without friends, a freak and an oddity. And so she obeyed her mother’s rule to refrain from using her innate ability, heeded her mother's warning that its use could land her in the local mental health facility alongside her aunt and grandmother.

But when sixteen-year-old Seraphina finds a mysterious, wounded boy hiding in the hollow in the woods behind her house, she can't hold out against the overpowering urge to help him. She is drawn to him each night, and as they come to know one another, their irresistible attraction blooms.

She longs to uncover his secrets — where he comes from and why he's hiding and how he came to be so wounded — and to share her own, though she knows it's forbidden. And while her healing touch seems to be helping him, it's hurting her. When the symptoms of psychosis — experienced by the women in her bloodline who used their powers — begin to plague Seraphina, she is faced with the unbearable choice of saving her sanity or the boy she’s come to love.

EXCERPT

As I tried to hug Gran, she jumped to the ground and twirled around. “Did anybody follow you in here?” She closed the door and pushed her chair up behind it. “They’ll be coming for me,” she whispered, sounding scared and certain.
“Mother,” my mom cooed. “No one is coming for you. Come sit down and tell me why MK is passed out like this in the middle of the day.” I didn’t know how she stayed calm with Gran acting so crazy. The room felt hot and too small. Besides the two beds and Gran’s chair, there was only room for the dresser with the TV and radio on top and a decaying brown recliner.
This,” Gran explained, “is what happens when you follow along. Pills go in, MK goes down. They’re trying to control us. Are you sure there wasn’t anyone behind you? They’ll be after me again. It’s that Johnny Rocket fella. He’s a bruiser. Did you see him in the hall?” She peeked behind the curtain. “I don’t know if I can take him down on my own. Why do you leave me with him when you know he wants to axe me?”
“Mother, try to focus. What about your pills?” Mom asked her.
Gran pointed at MK with a look that said something along the lines of she took them and I had nothing to do with it.
“Oh, Mother!” Mom stood up and turned to me. “I’m going to talk to the nurses. Looks like MK has been getting both of their doses again.” She glared at Gran. “Keep an eye on her, Seraphina.”
“An eye? An eye?” Gran called out, backing up against the wall as if I was about to peg her with an eyeball. “You keep your eyes to yourself, young lady. I’ve got two of my own and I don’t need any more thank you very much. I once knew a man in San Francisco who could take his eyeball out at will. Made a horrible sucking noise when he smushed it back in, like the sound of the bathtub emptying. Dangerous places bathtubs. I don’t fancy them myself. Fancy is as fancy does, so don’t go getting up on your high horse. Your horse, your horse, of course, of course.”
“It’s okay, Gran,” I promised, trying to unknot my stomach muscles and calm her at the same time. “My eyes are staying in my head.”
“Damn straight they are,” she mumbled, squinting her own at me like she didn’t trust me. “Straight as an arrow on a hot tin roof.” She pushed the chair under the doorknob.
I sat on her bed. “Can I ask you something?” It seemed hopeless given how out of it she was, but I had to at least try, besides maybe it would bring her around.
“Depends. Who told you to ask?”
“Just me. I was wondering about your sensitivity.”
“We don’t talk about that,” Gran parroted. “No siree, your mom says we don’t talk about that. Bad things could happen. We could bring down the apocalypse like the horsemen in colors of finery of the finest fine. Just like pine. Do you smell peppermint? Is it Christmastime?”
“No, Gran. There’s no peppermint. Listen, Mom’s out with the nurses,” I said. “She won’t talk about it with me, the sensitivity stuff. Come on, Gran, please?” Hope was trickling away. Some days she seemed so with it, so almost normal, and then some days were like this, where she couldn’t string together a complete thought.
“All right, quick then, what do you need to know?” She sat down practically on top of me, her head swiveling toward the door and back to the window.
“Is there a way to … you know, keep it from making you… I mean, is there some way to control it, to protect myself? Like, is it possible to… give in to it and still stay sane?” I couldn’t believe I’d actually thought it, much less said it out loud.
“Lordy be, if I’d figured that out I wouldn’t be in this joint. But there’s gotta be a way. They’re keeping it from us so we all end up in here with the crazies. It’s mind control. That’s why I won’t let them cut my hair. It’s a terrible waste. My locks protect me from those radio waves Johnny Rocket keeps sending. He thinks he can make me do whatever he damn well pleases. But I’m on to him. Don’t you end up in this trap, you hear me? It’s beastly. Of mice and men. Scattered on the shores like so much garbage. You figure out how to block those radio signals, then come back and spring us. All right?”
I could almost feel the wildness of her thoughts, like a storm wind, reckless and raging.

EXCERPT - ReAwakened by Ada Adams

Sebastian was the first to break our soundless stalemate. He moved in front of me. "Don't you get it?" he asked, towering over me. "I can't not worry, Dawn." His eyes pierced through me. "You planed yourself inside my head and now I can't get you out."
"You should."
"I've tried, believe me."
"Well, you should try harder," I mumbled, my fury slowly fizzling away.
He shook his head. "I'm not sure that I want to. I like how you feel inside my head." He ran a hand through his wet hair, then rested it against the open door behind me. The gesture caused him to lean forward, bringing him even closer.
Suddenly, all I could think about was the hard curve of his full, enticing lips.
If I just tilted my head slightly...
Snap out of it! my subconscious warned as I bit down on my lip.
"Those feelings you have are a lie!" I blurted out, pulling back. "It's all because I gave you my blood and accidentally ingest yours. It's like some kind of a Born-Made blood curse," I said, though, this - whatever it was - felt nothing at all like a curse.
"Are you telling me that I must ignore every single thought that's going through my mind right now?" he asked, moving close.
I took a tiny step back. "Yes. Definitely."
"What about my feeling?"
"Uh-huh. Those too."
"Every one of them?" His voice was low and husky.
"Yes," I whispered.
"Fine." He was saying one thing, but doing another, I realized, as he inched even closer.
"Good." I retreated further into the partially open door.
The cool sensation of the wood soothed my burning skin. My back pressed against the door, forcing it to slam shut. Sebastian's arm buckled under the sudden shift, sending him tumbling into me. He caught himself with his other hand mere inches before colliding with me, swiftly placing it on the other side of my head.
There was nowhere to run.
And even if I could escape, I wasn't sure that I wanted to. My head spun as I soaked in the aromatic fragrance of his body. Soap and bare skin and something more severe. Icy. Dangerous. His breath held a hint of cool mint, and I was suddenly overcome with the desire to taste him. Trying to expel the thought, I bit down on my bottom lip, desperately pleading with my heart to still.
He's the last person you should be thinking about kissing right now! the rational part of my mind screamed. The less rational part craved his lips and thirsted for his touch.
"Do your wounds hurt?" I asked in a frantic attempt to change the subject. I looked down at the light pink marks across his chest and arms.
"No. Do yours?" He cradled the back of my neck with his hand, gently trailing the two tiny fading scars with his thumb.
I shook my head and closed my eyes, losing myself in the sensation of his touch.
"Good," he whispered.
An astounding wave of pleasure surged through my body as he pressed his mouth to the wound, igniting the memory of his fangs against my skin. He trailed tender kisses along the side of my neck, down to my clavicle, then back up toward my jaw. His lips grew more fierce and his kisses deepened as his mouth finally found mine. I parted my lips, pulling him tighter into me, forgetting all about my intention to fight him. His fingers slid  through the belt loop of my jeans, grasping my hips, melting away the space between us. I entwined my hands through his damp hair, tugging gently at his curls while his hands glided under my tank-top, trailing across my abdomen to my back, sending shivers up my spine.
Somewhere amid the kisses, I remembered that I was supposed to be angry, but the thought quickly dissipated as he thrust me further into the door, running his lips across my skin. I gasped excitedly as the coolness of his hands alternated with the heat of his mouth; the clashing sensations vibrating rapidly through every inch of my body. I was trapped in a scorching inferno one moment, only to be plunged into the depths of an icy ocean the next.

 SUMMARY
Becoming a vampire guardian was Dawn Fairchild's ticket out of the Scarlet House. Fresh off a successful mission, life in Angel Creek should have been great. But when her sort-of-maybe-boyfriend, Sebastian, disappears on a quest to help a beautiful vampire from his past, Dawn finds herself amidst a web of danger, lies and deceit.

With time ticking away and Born vampires' lives in jeopardy, it quickly becomes evident that someone - or something - desperately wants Dawn and is willing to shed any amount of blood to get her.

Dawn has only one chance to face her demons and overcome all obstacles standing in her way as she embarks on the biggest mission of her life - one that threatens a deadly outcome for all involved.

MY REVIEW

Ada Adams does not disappoint - she really knows how to deliver a sequel!

More action, mystery, vampires, drama, romance and, of course, vampires!
Yes, there is a lot going on, but Ada Adams knows how to swiftly take you through Dawn's journey without any confusion and without leaving anything out or behind - her writing is the perfect combination of everything you want - the pacing is brilliant, enough details to create the perfect scenarios with a bit of a mystery to let you picture this world in your own mind.
I love when a sequel picks up immediately after the first book left off, no moments where spared...

In ReAwakened, Dawn and her Misfits are back in Angel Creek and have now been inducted as Angel Creek's official guardians. But before the festivities can finish, Dawn finds out that there are Born vampires being kidnapped by rogue vampires and mutant werewolves. And even worse, someone is definitely after Dawn too. And the plot just gets thicker and thicker...
We get to see Dawn grow and learn more about herself. Not only in her own relationships and who she is right now, and who she is becoming, but also, the extent of her powers and what she is capable of. She's still the kick-ass confident teen who cares deeply and will do anything to protect everyone, but now, she's even better and stronger than before. We also get to see her relationship with Sebastian bloom a bit more.
Sebastian... well, he is now even more handsome, mysterious and alluring...

I really enjoyed seeing some of the other characters grow more and come into their own - we get to hear a lot more about Hunter, which I loved seeing. In ReVamped, Hunter was full of mystery and sorrow and I ached to know more about him and his story. We also see more of Brooke and Seth's relationship, so funny and sweet.
And we also meet Razor.
His name alone cracks me up! He is quite the comical character and ice-breaker, sarcastic and witty. I really do love when a character is so well rounded and believable. And Razor, even with his stripper-boy-like name, does have a serious side that he lets us see, a more vulnerable and deeper side to him, which made him even more likable... who is Razor and how does he fit into the story? Can't tell you, too many things would spoil it for you!
We also meet Lena, another spoilery character, so I won't get into too many details about her. I didn't like her much in the beginning, but she grew on me and really does have a role in most things that happen to Dawn this time around. She is definitely one to keep your eye on.

And, I have to warn you, the is a huge cliffhanger to this one!
I almost died - but, it has to be the most cleverest one I have read in a very long time. Yes, it annoyed me to be left hanging like this, but, oh my, it is going to be so worth waiting for book 3!

Overall, this has to be one of the best sequels I have read in 2012. Ada Adams had definitely grown as a writer and I cannot wait to not only continue following Angel Creek's series, but also, whatever else she may right in the future.
I highly recommend this series to everyone who loves vampires, especially those who miss and love True Blood - but remember, this is a YA type of it!

I have to say, I could not put this book down! Courtney Cole really does know how to write a suspenseful turn-paging story. She captured Malta and its fairytale qualities beautifully, her descriptions of this romantic island made me feel like I was there - I can feel the sand in between my toes, smell the salty air and picture the sweet and helpful natives as my neighbors...

Everything about Luca is so mysterious, intriguing and steamy! The moment you meet him you can't help but feel drawn to him and wonder what he's all about, wonder how such an endearing, intelligent and passionate man could have such a dark side.
And, surprisingly, I liked Eva's character as well. She is a strong, smart and independent woman. She is in Malta to complete her work so she can finish getting her Psychology license in Portland. Being in the profession that she is in, it is difficult for her not to figure out people from the moment that she meets them. First impressions really determine the qualities in a person, after all, this is her work. But when she meets Luca, she starts to go through her 'list' and by the end of their first meeting, she is baffled and is determined to follow-up and get a better measure of him soon... of course, it helps that he is gorgeous and so very attractive. But her head is on right and she knows that she does not need a man in her life, although, it would be nice, especially if it was Luca.
The attraction between Luca and Eva is undeniable and understandable. Their first encounter was very sweet and quite funny. However, a few things that take place between them just didn't sit right with me and seemed to be downplayed by Eva. As romantic as some of the scenes between them were, there were a few that were not and her reactions to them took me by surprised. I can understand that she is falling for Luca and is very determined to help him and his "curse", but at what cost???
At times the story was predictable for me, but I thoroughly continued to enjoy the story. There were a few crucial parts that I thought were a bit rushed, but then again, everything still flowed really well and there wasn't anything that was missing.
The ending was perfect! And I wished that the epilogue wasn't included. Even though it still left me in wonderment and highly anticipating the next book, I felt it unnecessary to hear from this particular character again. But it did seal the deal to hate him even more... believe me, you will!

Definitely a great adult read to pick up and spend the afternoon with!
The first in a trilogy, I look forward to seeing whether or not Luca and Eva will be by the end!
