Review: WINNIE, The True Story of the Bear Who Inspired Winnie-the-Pooh by Sally M. Walker (C)

by Sally M. Walker
Illustrated by Jonathan D. Voss
Release date: January 20th, 2015
Published by: Henry Holt and Co. (Macmillan)
Genre: Children's Picture Book
Format: Hardcover, eBook
Format read: ARC from the publisher.

SUMMARY

Who could care for a bear?

When Harry Colebourn saw a baby bear for sale at the train station, he knew he could care for it. Harry was a veterinarian. But he was also a soldier in training for World War I. Harry named the bear Winnie, short for Winnipeg, his company’s home town, and he brought her along to the training camp in England. Winnie followed Harry everywhere and slept under his cot every night. Before long, she became the regiment’s much-loved mascot.

But who could care for the bear when Harry had to go to the battleground in France?

Harry found just the right place for Winnie while he was away — the London Zoo.

There a little boy named Christopher Robin came along and played with Winnie — he could care for this bear too!

Sally Walker’s heartwarming story, paired with Jonathan Voss’s evocative illustrations, brings to life the story of the real bear who inspired Winnie the Pooh.

MY REVIEW

I always knew that Winnie-the-Pooh was inspired by a real bear, but I never knew the actual story about how that bear came to inspire A.A. Milne's book. Told in a story format for all children to understand and enjoy, we learn about where the bear was found, how she was loved and brought to England, and how the famous author came to meet her.

During a quick train stop, Harry sees a bear and needs to know why there is a bear on a leash on the platform. He immediately runs off the train to see. And ends up buying the bear and bringing it with him to army training camp.
I don't think Harry, who names the bear Winnipeg, ever thought that he would be caring for a bear while taking of the army's horses during the war. And especially never could have foreseen how she would change everyone's lives, bring so much love and joy to those around her and would later go on to become one of the most famous bears in the world.

What my kids and I enjoyed the most is being able to see black and white photos of Harry, Winnie and other persons mentioned in the book. Along with the grand illustrations, which were precise with age and historical aspects, Winnie's story not only came to life for us, but it felt like we were there, alongside all the characters, discovering this sweet little bear and the world around her.

This is the perfect book for all who love Pooh, history and, also, those with lively imaginations that will allow them to hop on the train with Harry and Winnie and experience a wonderful adventure.

*An ARC was sent to me from the publisher for an honest review. All thoughts are my own.

Blog Tour (Review): WITHERWOOD REFORM SCHOOL by Obert Skye (MG)

by Obert Skye
Illustrated by Keith Thompson
Expected release date: March 3rd, 2015
Published by: Henry Holt and Co. (Macmillan)
Genre: Middle Grade
Format: Hardcover, eBook
Format read: ARC from the publisher.

SUMMARY

After a slight misunderstanding involving a horrible governess, oatmeal, and a jar of tadpoles, siblings Tobias and Charlotte Eggars find themselves abandoned by their father at the gates of a creepy reform school.

Evil mysteries are afoot at Witherwood, where the grounds are patrolled by vicious creatures after dark and kids are locked in their rooms.

Charlotte and Tobias soon realize that they are in terrible danger — especially because the head of Witherwood has perfected the art of mind control.

If only their amnesiac father would recover and remember that he has two missing children.

If only Tobias and Charlotte could solve the dark mystery and free the kids at Witherwood —
and ultimately save themselves.

MY REVIEW

There are very few authors that can pull off such a wickedly humorous story about two siblings that !

The narrator tells us the story about how Tobias and Charlotte Eggars ended up at Witherwood Reform School. And it is not a pretty nor easy story to tell.
Tobias is a normal boy that likes a little mischief. He's very smart and thinks better when he can write things down and loves to study and draw maps. Very protective and attuned to his younger sister.
Charlotte is also just a normal girl who always sees the bright things to every situation. She compliments her brother's darkers side too well. She always seems to be the voice of reason.
The school is dark, mysterious, strange and... perhaps even evil. Too many odd and unexplained things occur. A headmaster that is able to brainwash the students. Unknown guardians that could possibly kill any intruders, and/or, escapees.
And the narrator knows how to guide us with what is right, what is wrong, and what Tobias and Charlotte should have and shouldn't have done. The narrator is very smart, cautious and to the point. Anyone reading this book should take much care in what the narrator suggests.

There is no happy ending here. Tobias and Charlotte brought this bad luck onto themselves. And it will definitely take some time to figure out what they have done, what they are mixed up in... and if they will ever learn their lesson(s) and be able to make amends in order to get out of Witherwood... sane and whole.

Definitely for fans of Lemony Snicket's Unfortunate Events series, this book will have you laughing out loud, grossed out and on the edge of your seat! I anxiously await for the next book to be released! Will the Eggers siblings be able to behave enough to not get into anymore trouble? Will they figure out a way to leave the reformed school for good? So many questions, so little time... can't wait!!!

*An ARC was sent to me from the publisher for the blog tour and an honest review. All thoughts are my own.

TUCK EVERLASTING 40th Anniversary Blog Tour: What if You Could Live Forever???

I am so thrilled to be a part of the TUCK EVERLASTING 40 Days For 40 Years anniversary blog tour! More excited that this book is finally being re-released in a hardcover format! And even happier to know that this is a book that will always, continuously, be shared with younger generations for many, many more years to come! A small book that will live on forever, and ever!!!...

2015 marks the 40th anniversary of Natalie Babbitt’s celebrated, ground-breaking title Tuck Everlasting (Anniversary edition on sale January 20). In celebration of the anniversary, Macmillan Children’s Publishing Group will publish a special anniversary edition featuring an introduction from Wicked author Gregory Maguire.

Natalie will be in conversation with Gregory Maguire at Symphony Space in New York City on Sunday, January 25 at 1:00 PM. Alexis Bledel, star of the 2002 movie adaptation, will read from the book.

Tuck Everlasting asks readers “What if you could live forever?”
Doomed to, or blessed with, eternal life after drinking from a magic spring, the Tuck family wanders about trying to live as inconspicuously and comfortably as they can. When ten-year-old Winnie Foster stumbles on their secret, the Tucks take her home and explain why living forever at one age is less of a blessing than it might seem. Then complications arise when Winnie is followed by a stranger who wants to market the spring water for a fortune.

Upon the book’s publication in 1975, Natalie was greeted with concern from parents and educators who were stunned to read a book about death written for children. She is an author who challenges her readers and thinks the best questions are the ones without answers.

This 40th anniversary will introduce a whole new generation to this timeless classic. The book has sold over 3.5 million copies in the US alone, and has never been out of print since publication.

SUMMARY

Blessed with — or doomed to — eternal life after drinking from a magic spring, the Tuck family wanders about trying to live as inconspicuously and comfortably as they can.

When ten-year-old Winnie Foster stumbles on their secret, the Tucks take her home and explain why living forever at one age is less of a blessing than it might seem. Complications arise when Winnie is followed by a stranger who wants to market the spring water for a fortune.

A brand-new introduction from Gregory Maguire, the author of Wicked, and additional bonus materials make this special edition of Natalie Babbitt's Tuck Everlasting a must-have for lovers of the book and a great way to introduce a new generation to a classic.

WHAT IF YOU COULD LIVE FOREVER???

Ah, the question that has been asked over and over again for many, many years - what if I could live on forever and ever??? A question that will eternally be asked. A question that will always be answered in many different ways. And these some of these answers will differ for each person... and some persons will have more than just one answer. Like me. Let me explain...

If you were to ask me this question when I was Winnie's age, I would have giggled and said...
"Of course I would want to live forever! I would travel the world! Have all the toys in the world! Play with other children. Learn other languages and cultures. And never have to worry about anything, because I am just a kid. Which means, that I would always have someone to take care of me. But I would be free to do what I want to do... forever!"
Of course, I would expect my parents to be the ones by my side, for eternity. The innocence of not knowing, or caring, what the future may hold - no worries. The Peter Pan sort of life! I was sold! And also, why Peter Pan is one of my all-time favorite stories!

Now ask me again, ten years later...
The first time I read TUCK EVERLASTING, I was a senior in high school. At this age, I had never read anything like this book. I instantly had much love for the Tuck family. For Jesse. After a few days, I reread their story. And couldn't help romanticizing the concept of being able to live forever...
At seventeen, I would have said...
"Of course I would want to live forever! How stupid was Winnie to have done what she did. Poor Jesse. I would have done what he asked and found him - go on adventures and see the world. Nothing would get in our way! No one to tell us what to do. We'd live for each other and see everything until the end of time."
The idea of being carefree and seeing the world was a dream of mine. How wonderful it would be to live forever with your first love and do all the things everyone has always said that you couldn't do.

Another ten years go by. I'm now newly married and a first time mommy. Ask me now...
"Of course I would want to live forever! I would love to be able to go through life knowing that I don't have to worry about losing a minute of it because I know that I will always be around. I want to see my child grow up, get married, have children of his own and watch as each generation comes. With my knowledge and expertise, I would be helpful and one-of-a-kind. I would love, and be so loved! Endless love..."
There is nothing like the love of a child! A sweet baby snuggled in your arms, knowing that his love for you will be eternal - you don't want that feeling to ever go away; to never end!

Another ten years go by. Presently, I have been married for over 10 years, 3 kids, a nephew... family and friends, that are so very loved, and cherished. Ask me now, today, if I would want to live on forever...
"All these years I have quickly answered YES, I do want to live forever! And I would give you a million and one reasons as to why I would want to. However. After reading TUCK EVERLASTING again for the umpteenth time, I've finally come to realize what Winnie saw when she was just a child.
No. I no longer want to live on for forever. I want to cherish however much time I have; whether it may be just a few more minutes or fifty more years. I believe that if I were to live on, I would not appreciate what I have now because there will always be a tomorrow. If I was to have chosen to live forever before this time, I would have missed out on so much! I would not have my children, I would not be living my life as I am now.
I feel that I may take advantage of my time, since it would be eternal. And knowing that my loved ones may not have that same amount of time, I cannot live on and forget about them. The thought of being without them is so painful. I hope to get to see my children grow up and have families of their own - my grandmother lived until she was 104, it is quite possible that I may too. I will see plenty, witness many loving moments and little miracles. Why should I expect more than that? Why should I deserve more than that? It just doesn't seem natural to me not to experience old age. It is frightening to think of and face - especially when I'm supposedly halfway done with my life now. But as I look upon the elders in my family, and see so many of them so happy, and embracing what they've learned and experience. I feel that I am now prepared to do the same thing.
I am honored and proud to have earned my greys and wrinkles. And I finally feel brave enough to say that I am ready for my future and whatever it may hold. I will not run away from it anymore."

So, my final answer is... no. But, thank you for asking.

If you had the opportunity to live forever, would you???

Review: SUPERTRUCK by Stephen Savage (C)

by Stephen Savage
Release date: January 6th, 2015
Published by: Roaring Brook Press (Macmillan)
Genre: Children's Picture Book
Format: Hardcover, eBook
Format read: ARC from the publisher

SUMMARY

When the city is hit by a colossal snowstorm, only one superhero can save the day.

But who is this mysterious hero, and why does he disappear once his job is done?

Find out in this snowy tale about a little truck with a very big job,
the second of Steve Savage's vehicle-based picture books.

MY REVIEW

In this charming little book, we learn about all the important and hardworking vehicles that move around our cities and towns, helping us in many ways, always getting their jobs done no matter what the season is. The fire truck puts out fires, the tow truck rescues cars... and the garbage truck, well, he just collects the trash.

But, who will help them all when a terrible blizzard storms in and the whole city has to come to a complete standstill??? SUPERTRUCK to the rescue!!!
All the trucks, big and small, are stuck and cannot complete their jobs. But Supertruck puts on his plow and digs the whole city out! The other trucks are so grateful... and wonder, who is this marvelous vehicle?

First of all, the cuteness starts with brightly colored and captivating illustrations. Each page is filled to the brim with minimalist drawings and colors, giving each vehicle its most known quality shape and color to stand out and easily be identifiable.
Second, the simple storyline is quite engaging. After the first few reads, my one year old scramble off to go find his trucks - not only did we match most of them to the pictures in the book, but we also played and made sure to give Supertruck time to cover his identity, just like Superman. I adore books that encourage my kids to get up and play while reading it!
And lastly, who doesn't love a good superhero!!!

A sweet book for the little superhero/comic book lover in your family!

SUMMARY
In order to be a real superhero, you have to follow some important rules:

Rule #1: A superhero must ALWAYS respond to a call for help.

Rule #2: Saving the day is messy. But everyone understands.

In this handy guide, Captain Magma and his trusty sidekick, Lava Boy, take young readers on an adventure to learn all ten rules of being a good superhero.

BOOK TRAILER

MY REVIEW

An amusing and fun illustrated book for the little superhero in your life!

Captain Magma and his sweet sidekick, Lava Boy, show you some pretty important things on how to be a superhero. Following these rules will help you succeed in being the best superhero that you can be - and having a trusty sidekick is a super-bonus!

A few important rules to follow:
Rule #2 - Even though saving the say can be a messy job, somebody has to clean it up! (Meaning, even though you had a fun time learning, playing, etc. in the end, you must be responsible and clean up after yourself.)
Rule #3 - A superhero is always brave... but it's okay not to be. Sometimes even the strongest are afraid of something. And that's okay, as long as we try to overcome it. And even if we don't. Trying to understand why we are and coping can be good enough too.

This interactive book will have your little superhero ready to go and eager to count and read along. The colorful illustrations will not only engage them to play along with Captain Magma and Lava Boy, but will also help them see the moral to each rule and remember the true meaning of being a good superhero.

The ultimate book for the inventive child in your life!

Stacking the Shelves #77: November 2014 Book Haul (Part 2) and Comic Book Haul #1

Hello my wonderful and amazing bookish friends!
Seriously, you guys are the bestest!!!

First, a very big and belated Happy Thanksgiving to all of my U.S. friends!
Hope you had a wonderful holiday with family, friends and good food :)

Temperatures have dropped drastically, winter has decided to come early and even though I'm a huge fan of winter, I am completely unprepared and have been freezing my butt off, lol!...
funny thing is - temperatures began to drop as I was reading SNOW LIKE ASHES by Sara Raasch, and when I finished reading it earlier last week - let's just say that the Winterians would have been pleased that I was freezing my butt off, lol! The perfect book for this time of the year! I will be reviewing it soon, but know for now - I'm giving it a 5-BEE rating :) I highly recommend it!!!

Also, very recently, I have discovered my love for comic books again!
I have read a few graphic novels in the last few months, and I have been itching to get back into comic book series and have decided to embrace my inner nerdgirl and finally got myself to my local comic book store! To say that the guys at the store were a bit shocked to see me strut in is an understatement, lol! But, they kept their chuckles to a minimum and were very helpful for everything that I am currently looking for. I have quite a list, and in their words:
"Please don't be offended, but for a girl, you are going to keep us quite busy!"
Mind you, all of the stores workers are over the age of 50 (except for one, lol!) and were quite happy to see a girl come in, knowing "her stuff" and are more than eagerly to help me find what I'm looking to read :) I'm really excited to start sharing my comic book love, pull lists, tradebacks, etc. with my boys and all of you!!!

For now, here's my official haul for November :)
It's unexpectedly quite large, and I am very grateful and thankful for my lovely books!

(Please note, that the majority of my haul is Young Adult. Otherwise, books that aren't will be noted with either (A) for Adult, (NA) for New Adult, (MG) for Middle Grade, and (C) for Childrens books.)
