Waiting On Wednesday: SHADOW OF THE FOX by Julie Kagawa (YA)

"Waiting On Wednesday" is a weekly meme that used to be hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine. I've missed posting these on a weekly basis and have decided to start doing them again.
Waiting On Wednesday is where I/we get to "spotlight" the books that we are most looking forward to reading soon!

Today's pick is...

by Julie Kagawa
Expected release date: October 2nd, 2018
Published by: Harlequin Teen
Genre: Young Adult Fantasy
Format: Hardcover, eBook

SUMMARY

Once every thousand years...

Every millennium, one age ends and another age dawns...
and whoever holds the Scroll of a Thousand Prayers holds the power to call the great Kami Dragon from the sea and ask for any one wish. The time is near... and the missing pieces of the scroll will be sought throughout the land of Iwagoto. The holder of the first piece is a humble, unknown peasant girl with a dangerous secret.

Demons have burned the temple Yumeko was raised in to the ground, killing everyone within, including the master who trained her to both use and hide her kitsune shapeshifting powers. Yumeko escapes with the temple's greatest treasure - one part of the ancient scroll. Fate thrusts her into the path of a mysterious samurai, Kage Tatsumi of the Shadow Clan. Yumeko knows he seeks what she has... and is under orders to kill anything and anyone who stands between him and the scroll.

A wish will be granted and a new age will dawn.

MY THOUGHTS

I am SO happy that we are all getting another book/series from Julie Kagawa!!!
Although I have not been able to finish her TALON series yet (sorry! I plan to!), I have been a fan since the first book of the IRON FEY was released!

There are SO many good things that this summary has to offer! Some things that caught my eye are...
- "... ask for any one wish."
- "... unknown peasant girl with a dangerous secret."
- "Demons..."
- "... hide her kitsune shapeshifting powers."

I'm excited about this, are you???

What else are you dying to get your hands on soon???

"Waiting On Wednesday" is a weekly meme hosted by Breaking the Spine.

This is where we get to 'spotlight' books that we are anxiously waiting to be released!!!
The ones that we are dying to get our hands on and read into the wee hours of the night!!!
And, quite possibly, to make our shelves look pretty too :)

These are only a few of my most highly anticipated books for 2015!!!

Oh, how I wish they were all releasing today!!!

I AM PRINCESS X
by Cherie Priest
Expected release date: May 26th, 2015
Published by: Arthur A. Levine Books
Genre: Young Adult Contemporary
Format: Hardcover, eBook

SUMMARY

Once upon a time, two best friends created a princess together. Libby drew the pictures, May wrote the tales, and their heroine, Princess X, slayed all the dragons and scaled all the mountains their imaginations could conjure.

Once upon a few years later, Libby was in the car with her mom, driving across the Ballard Bridge on a rainy night. When the car went over the side, Libby passed away, and Princess X died with her.

Once upon a now: May is sixteen and lonely, wandering the streets of Seattle, when she sees a sticker slapped in a corner window.

Princess X?

When May looks around, she sees the Princess everywhere: Stickers. Patches. Graffiti. There's an entire underground culture, focused around a webcomic at IAmPrincessX.com. The more May explores the webcomic, the more she sees disturbing similarities between Libby's story and Princess X online. And that means that only one person could have started this phenomenon - her best friend, Libby, who lives.

Why I'm waiting for I AM PRINCESS X...

Everything about this book makes my nerdgirl/comic book loving heart pitter-patter!!!

The story sounds like a great contemporary mystery...
and I love that bookcover!!!

Definitely sounds like promising read :)

Published by: HarlequinTeen
Genre: Young Adult Contemporary/Paranormal
Format: Hardcover, eBook

SUMMARY

Ember Hill left the dragon organization Talon to take her chances with rebel dragon Cobalt and his crew of rogues. But Ember can't forget the sacrifice made for her by the human boy who could have killed her—Garret Xavier Sebastian, a soldier of the dragonslaying Order of St. George, the boy who saved her from a Talon assassin, knowing that by doing so, he'd signed his own death warrant.

Determined to save Garret from execution, Ember must convince Cobalt to help her break into the Order's headquarters. With assassins after them and Ember's own brother helping Talon with the hunt, the rogues find an unexpected ally in Garret and a new perspective on the underground battle between Talon and St. George.

A reckoning is brewing and the secrets hidden by both sides are shocking and deadly. Soon Ember must decide: Should she retreat to fight another day…or start an all-out war?

Why I'm waiting for ROGUE...

SOOO!!! Did you read TALON?!?!?!
Because if you did, then you know why this is on my list!!!

Cliff-hanger much?! Geesh!!!

And I'm usually not a fan of love-triangles, BUT, I really can't decide who to choose! Nor, can I see where this story is going to go! Which is such a GOOD thing!

Plus, cool dragon bookcovers :)

Published by: Bloomsbury USA Childrens
Genre: Young Adult Paranormal Historical Fiction
Format: Hardcover

SUMMARY

New York Times bestselling author brings dark secrets to life in a lush new YA perfect for fans of Libba Bray or Cassandra Clare.

Society girls from New York City circa 1890, Dacia and Lou never desired to know more about their lineage, instead preferring to gossip about the mysterious Romanian family that they barely knew.

But upon turning seventeen, the girls must return to their homeland to meet their relatives, find proper husbands, and — most terrifyingly —learn the deep family secrets of The Claw, The Wing, and The Smoke. The Florescus, after all, are shape-shifters, and it is time for Dacia and Lou to fulfill the prophecy that demands their acceptance of this fate...
or fight against this cruel inheritance with all their might.

With a gorgeous Romanian setting, stunning Parisian gowns, and dark brooding young men, readers will be swept up by this epic adventure of two girls in a battle for their lives.

Why I'm waiting on SILVER IN THE BLOOD...

This author has been recommended to me many times for her Princess trilogy, which is a retelling of the Twelve Dancing Princesses. Sadly, I have yet to pick it up... however...

This one sounds epic!
I love everything about this summary - 1890 NYC, mysterious Romanian family, shape-shifters!!!
It's been SO long since I have read a really good supernatural book!

by Doug Tennapel
Expected release date: January 6th, 2015
Published by: GRAPHIX (Scholastic)
Genre: Middle Grade Graphic Novel
Format: Hardcover, Paperback, eBook

SUMMARY

A little hero faces big challenges in the first book of this totally unique fantasy-adventure series.

The first book in the Nnewts series follows the story of Herk, a lovable Nnewt who longs for stronger legs, something his mother and father wish they could give him.

When his quaint village is attacked by the reptile Lizzarks, he's forced to flee his home and leave behind the only life he's ever known.

Now, all alone and on the run, Herk navigates a dangerous world filled with strange creatures and mysterious wonders, where friends are few and an evil lord is in hot pursuit.

Why I'm waiting on NNEWTS...

I am really, really into graphic novels and the like right now...

First! This is Graphix's (Scholastic's) first graphic novel SERIES!!!
It's important to know...
- Graphic novels are usually standalones.
- Trade paperbacks are comic book bindups of approximately 5-6 comic book issues. These are not considered graphic novels. (A huge pet-peeve of mine when people keep referring to these trades as graphic novels. Huge!!! lol!)

Second! The illustrations/art look amazingly cute!!!

Lastly, but not least! The story sounds like a good one. One that I can definitely share with my boys and hopefully get into together :)

 MY REVIEWS
An ARC was received for an honest review.

A REAL BOY is a dystopian retelling of... I really wanted to say Pinocchio, but because it's suppose to be based on a Grimm story, I am going to have to go with Little Red Riding Hood...

In this future world, the rules have changed - humans can no longer go outside without breathing filters and the risk of being severely burned within 20 minutes of being exposed; they must get a license to pro-create by medical standards and they're babies are raised in a "c" until they are 5 years old, which is when they can go home to be with their families. At 12 years of age, all humans must take an assessment test to decipher their future. Meanwhile, there are robots all around being programmed to do most things that humans can no longer do. As perfect and near human that they look, they are still stiff in movement and lack personality and compassion. And Blue has no problem working with them and lacking in making any connections with anyone, including the humans around her.

For the last 5 years, Blue has been working as a cybernetics apprentice for Professor Jafet and is determined to work as hard as she can to get ahead in her career; she agrees to work with the Professor on a new "experiment".
Imagine her surprise when the Professor's experiment is named Rowan. A robot like no other; and no human comes close to what he is either.

"You don't realize how selfish a feeling love can be until it calls you to do something selfless."
- Blue, GRIM (ARC, page 351)

At first, because of the set up and the characters names, I had a strong feeling that the story was based on Pinocchio - The Professor being Geppetto (she created Rowan), Rowan is Pinocchio (robots aren't suppose to tell lies) and Blue, "the conscious" (struggling with what is right/wrong or following her heart).
But, I also feel that this story could be a retelling of Little Red Riding Hood. Blue being Little Red, The Professor being the Grandmother, and Rowan the Wolf. The forbidden love between Blue and Rowan mimicking Little Red and the Wolf because of society not accepting what Rowan/Wolf is and the indecision of Blue/Little Red with doing what is right and following her heart.

I hope that Claudia Gray decides to expand on this short story sometime in the near future! Rowan is definitely someone (something?) that I would like to see more of!

ABOUT THE AUTHOR - Claudia Gray

 * * *

SKIN TRADE is a retelling of Hansel and Gretel... Locke and Britt.
Oh my, this one is dark. So very dark, it made knots in my stomach.
It's a bit gory. There is blood and other stuff; not too graphic, but definitely enough for my over-active imagination... I really don't want to say more, if I do, I will definitely give the story away.

"Strip the marrow from the bones."
- Doris, SKIN TRADE (ARC, page 394)

And if you like twisted, dark tales - you would buy this book just to read this one!

ABOUT THE AUTHOR - Myra McEntire

    * * *

BEAUTY AND THE CHAD is a retelling of Beauty and the Beast in the most comical way! The author has flipped their personalities making the Beast easy-going, witty, sincere and quite funny. He was transformed by some "broad" while at his fraternity, and he misses his Xbox most of all. He speaks like a 'surfer dude' and is very eager to do most things himself. He does not care for magic or whimsical beauty.
Beauty, is straight-forward, a rule follower and does not understand a word that the Beast speaks of, saying things like 'high five' and referring to her as a dude. She is surprised by the Beasts ways, and even more surprised over his willingness to share his exact feelings with her.
Can this Beauty tame the unruly Beast and help him learn his lesson???

"This whole 'Beast' deal? Kinda hurtful," said the Beast
    "Call me Chad."
    - The Beast aka Chad, GRIM (ARC page 406)

HarlequinTeen #YeahYA Signing Wrap-Up: Julie Kagawa, Katie McGarry and Aimee Carter

Last night was the night! My sister, Sarabeth of The Next Chapter, and I attended Harlequin Teen's Author Fest at Barnes and Noble in Carle Place, (LI) NY and got to meet a lot of people!
Here's a recap of what happened during the event...

When you first walk into B&N they were all set with a wonderful display of books for everyone to grab! As you can see, the stacks were already low when we got there a whole hour before it started :)
Entrance - So many books were gone already!
Here is the signing table!!!
Waiting for the authors!
While waiting for the authors and their editors to arrive...

Harlequin Teen created this wonderful tee-shirt for the event!
However, my preggo belly did not fit in it, lol! So my beautiful sister got to show it off :)
Front
Back
The crowd!!!
SO many people, of all ages, from near and far!
This is by far one of the best turn outs I have ever seen at this location :)
Shout out to all our booknerds!!!
The awesome crowd at B&N, Carle Place
Our mom tagged along for the ride...
she was trying to stay out of the way and hide from us and the crowd, but we found her ;)
My Mami patiently waiting on the sidelines, lol
The authors finally arrive!!!
Julie Kagawa, Katie McGarry and Aimee Carter answering questions
Kady Cross, the author of the Steampunk Chronicles, could not make it - she was sick with the flu :(
We missed her and wish her a speedy recovery!!!

A few author Q&A's...

A few more Q&A's...

I wasn't able to record any more than these two clips...
however, the Q&A continued for quite a while:

A few more Q&A's that were asked/answered:

- Where does your inspiration come from?
Aimee: is inspired by what she wants to read.

Julie: is inspired by video games, anime and manga.

Katie: is inspired by tiny pieces of herself, her own life experiences,
especially from her teen and high school years, are integrated into her books.

- Where do they get their plot ideas?
Katie: from music.

Julie: It is different for every book.
For the Iron Fey series - Meaghan's character came to her first,
and then the rest of the world-building and story revolved around her.
For the Blood of Eden trilogy - Julie has a side of her that loves the dark and doom of a post-apocalyptic world - so the world-building came first and then that inspired her to create a strong main character that can survive this world.

Aimee: One sentence, just one line, or one lyric, can get her plot going in an instant.

- What are you working on now?
Aimee: is working on a new 4-book series called The Blackcoat Rebellion! The first book in the series is called Pawn and it is being released on November 26th, 2013...
the series takes place in dystopian/futuristic America - when a person turns 17 years of age, they have to be evaluated and are placed on a level - I through VII... one being the lowest and 7 being the highest and most privileged since sevens can be 'masked' to take on the roles of high figures that have passed on... {sounds super creative and intriguing! Cannot wait to hear more about this!}

Katie: is getting ready to release the third book to her Pushing the Limits series called Crash Into You, which is due out on November November 26th, too! {ISAIAH!}

Katie is also working on a new 4-book series, the first book is said to be released sometime in 2014 - this series is being compared to "West Side Story" meets "Sons of Anarchy"...
here is the summary:
"A teen boy brought up in the rough and tumble world of motorcycle clubs finds love with a girl raised outside of this world, when he’s tasked with not only protecting her for the summer she visits her father (the leader of the group), but also with preventing her from learning the truth about her father’s past and the gang he used to lead."

Julie: is currently working on numerous projects!
First, the second book to the Iron Fey's Call of the Forgotten trilogy, called The Iron Traitor, is being released on October 29th, 2013! With the last book being released sometime in 2014 - no title or spoilers for this one yet!

Julie is also working on the last book of the Blood of Eden Trilogy, which will be released sometime in 2014 as well, the title is The Forever Song... and there are no spoilers out for this one out either! {She's really, really good at keeping everything a secret, geesh! lol!}

Julie is also hard at work on her latest announcement: a 5-book series that has also been optioned with Universal Studios!!! Everything about this series is extremely tight-lipped! All that she was able to say was that the first book will probably be released in 2015... and that the story takes place in the present day, where mythical creatures hide amongst us cloaked as humans.
{That's it! What a tease!!!}

And then it was time... time to sign all those books!!!
Julie Kagawa, Katie McGarry and Aimee Carter signing
Also bumped into some fellow bloggers!!!
I met Jessica of Step Into Fiction! She came all the way from Maryland :)
Jessica of Step Into Fiction and I
We were so lucky to have some time with all three of them after the signing!
Julie Kagawa, Katie McGarry, Me, Sarabeth of The Next Chapter, and Aimee Carter
My signed books and bookmarks :)

And of course I had to ask them one important question!
They all have come up with so many amazing names for all of their characters - especially their boys...
since I already have 2 boys, we're having a hard time deciding on a name for baby boy #3,
so of course, I asked them for help :)  And here's what they suggested:

Aimee: Knox
Katie: Jonah
Julie: Quinn

What do you think??? :)

We had SO much fun!!!
A HUGE thank you to Kismet Book Tours and Harlequin Teen for letting us be a part of the tour!
And another HUGE thank you to the authors for making it such a wonderful event and taking the time to chat with us even more! They are all such amazing people!

P.S. - there are more dates left on the tour!!!
Take a look and see which one is closest to you and go!!! :)
