Review: WINK POPPY MIDNIGHT by April Genevieve Tucholke (YA)

by April Genevieve Tucholke
Release date: March 22nd, 2016
Published by: Dial Books (Penguin Random House)
Genre: Young Adult Contemporary
Format: Hardcover, eBook, Audiobook
Format read: ARC acquired from a book blogger friend.

SUMMARY

Every story needs a hero.
Every story needs a villain.
Every story needs a secret.

Wink is the odd, mysterious neighbor girl, wild red hair, and freckles.
Poppy is the blond bully and the beautiful, manipulative high school queen bee.
Midnight is the sweet, uncertain boy caught between them.
Wink. Poppy. Midnight.
Two girls.
One boy.
Three voices that burst onto the page in short, sharp, bewitching chapters, and spiral swiftly and inexorably toward something terrible or tricky or tremendous.

What really happened?
Someone knows.
Someone is lying.

MY REVIEW

*An ARC (Advanced Reader Copy) was acquired from a book blogger friend for free to read and review. All thoughts here are my very own.

This book has my brain all jumbled up! It was whimsical, addicting and... everything that you would want in a book that will leave you feeling overwhelmed and confused in such a good way... I'm advising you now, when you pick up this book, be prepared to be sucked in until the end. This is not a book that you could/should read in spurts or while reading other books. This book will demand your undivided attention and you should not go against it!

Wink, Poppy and Midnight are our three main characters and the story is told from all of their point-of-views... there is a love triangle here, BUT, it is not like anything you have probably read before. Their story is so complicated and full of unexpected twists and turns, revelations and more. No one who is who you think they are and then they are and then they're not again. Their story is full of manipulation, and puzzling thoughts... they're not here to make friends with you, to get you to connect with them and sympathize; they're here to tell a story, their story.

Wink is the new girl next door who believes in fairytales and feels that life should be lived like one, and feels that Midnight is the hero to her story.

Poppy is purposely the villain. She admittedly has a black heart and enjoys playing with peoples emotions and their lives. And will do anything to claim what is hers and put people in their rightful place. Midnight is hers and she will play along, or until she grows bored.

And, Midnight. Midnight is our lost boy who is in love with two girls who may be exactly who he thinks they are and also knows that he doesn't. He's torn between the two, but he also has his own story to tell.

THE WRITING! Oh, my goodness - the writing is AMAZING! It is flawless and lyrical; some passages are so captivating and realistic. For me, while reading, I felt like I was there seeing everything first hand, smelling the strawberries and barn, feeling the sheets and the grass between my toes, seeing the dust and cobwebs. It is quite eerie the way the magic of Tucholke's writing had on me.

I highly recommend this book to those who want a quick read to fall into for a while and get lost in, to then take some time to find a way to climb out of. For those who love honest complex characters, mysteries and a mind-boggling experience.

Release Day Blitz (Giveaway): CIRCUS MIRANDUS by Cassie Beasley (MG)

I am so very excited about today’s release of CIRCUS MIRANDUS by the fabulous Cassie Beasley!

Thank you for stopping by for the Blogger Blitz that I and so many other wonderful blogs are participating in. Thanks so much to Word Spelunking for organizing this!

Cassie has sent along a very special letter sharing her feelings about seeing her book get published and all of the amazing support she has received so far...

Dear Readers,

Ages ago I hung a poster in my room with the words “The Circus Opens Summer 2015” in bold letters across the top. At the time, it seemed that Summer 2015 would never come. Now, miraculously, June 2 is here, and Circus Mirandus is springing up in bookshops all over the country.

In the story, those called to Circus Mirandus feel a change in the wind. They hear music on the air, pipes and drums leading them toward magic and hope and heart’s desires. Eventually they find themselves before the gates, standing, as I am now, on the threshold of somewhere both wonderful and unknowable.

As people read the pages into which I’ve poured so much time and self, I wonder what they’ll think of the world I’ve created. I wonder if they will love it as much as I do. It’s an exciting moment, stepping through these gates into a place I’ve imagined but never seen.

Thank you so much for making this journey with me. Thank you for supporting the book. Thank you, most of all, for believing.

Cassie Beasley

More details about the book are below, as well as a Rafflecopter giveaway for a bunch of swag items, courtesy of Penguin Young Readers!

SUMMARY

Micah Tuttle believes in magic, even though his awful Great-Aunt Gertrudis doesn’t approve. Micah believes in the stories his dying Grandpa Ephraim tells him of the magical Circus Mirandus: the invisible tiger guarding the gates, the beautiful flying birdwoman, and the magician more powerful than any other — the Man Who Bends Light.

Finally, Grandpa Ephraim offers proof.

The Circus is real — and the Lightbender owes Ephraim a miracle.

With his friend Jenny Mendoza in tow, Micah sets out to find the Circus and the man he believes will save his grandfather. The only problem is, the Lightbender doesn't want to keep his promise. And now it's up to Micah to get the miracle he came for.

Readers will fall in love with CIRCUS MIRANDUS, which celebrates the power of seeing magic in the world.

ADVANCE PRAISE FOR CIRCUS MIRANDUS

« On one level, the book is a fantastical circus romp On another, it's both serious and thick with longing A delicious confection and much more: it shows that the human heart is delicate, that it matters, and that it must be handled with care.”                                     —Kirkus Reviews, starred review

«Circus Mirandus is not a simple story, but readers will be rewarded for delving into its intricacies. This gripping fantasy tale will have readers hooked from the opening scene to the breathtaking—and unexpected—conclusion.”                                                                 —School Library Journal, starred review

« “Beasley’s debut is a bit of its own three-ring circus, masterfully diverting readers’ attention among the pressing matter of Ephraim’s illness, the inventive descriptions of Circus Mirandus in Ephraim’s flashbacks and Micah’s visits, and the larger, more serious tragedy of those who refuse to believe…Readers will be left with…the hope…that those who still believe will always have magic in their lives.”                                                                                                       Publishers Weekly, starred review

“Debut author Beasley has built an imaginative world in evocative, painterly prose, particularly the circus, and she’s filled it with compellingly multifaceted characters.”                               —Booklist

Waiting On Wednesday #132: NOT AFTER EVERYTHING by Michelle Levy (YA)

"Waiting On Wednesday" is a weekly meme hosted by Breaking the Spine.

This is where we get to 'spotlight' books that we are anxiously waiting to be released!!!
The ones that we are dying to get our hands on and read into the wee hours of the night!!!
And, quite possibly, to make our shelves look pretty too :)

What I'm currently waiting for...

by Michelle Levy
Expected release date: August 4th, 2015
Published by Dial Books for Young Readers (Penguin)
Genre: Young Adult Contemporary
Format: Hardcover, eBook

SUMMARY

A gritty but hopeful love story about two struggling teens -
great for fans of The Spectacular Now, Willow, and Eleanor and Park

Tyler has a football scholarship to Stanford, a hot girlfriend, and a reliable army of friends to party with. Then his mom kills herself. And Tyler lets it all go.

Now he needs to dodge what his dad is offering (verbal tirades and abuse) and earn what his dad isn't (money). Tyler finds a job that crashes him into Jordyn, his former childhood friend turned angry-loner goth-girl. She brings Tyler an unexpected reprieve from the never-ending pity party his life has become. How could he not fall for her?

But with his dad more brutally unpredictable than ever, Tyler knows he can't risk bringing Jordyn too deeply into the chaos.

So when violence rocks his world again, will it be Jordyn who shows him the way to a hopeful future? Or after everything, will Tyler have to find it himself?

Why I'm waiting on AFTER EVERYTHING...

First of all, it's being compared to ELEANOR & PARK! Which is one of my all-time favorite contemporaries!!!

Secondly... it's a story that is calling out to me. It's rare to see a story about a teen boy being abused, struggling and trying to keep it together. I've read so many books from the girls perspective.

Lastly, the whole summary has already made my heart ache.
And the cover is really unique! I'm really looking forward to it!

SO, what are you waiting for right now?!?!?!

A True Adoption Story
by Maria Faulconer
Illustrated by Susan Kathleen Hartung
Release date: April 3rd, 2014
Published by: Dial Books for Young Readers
Genre: Children's Picture Book
Format: Hardcover, eBook

SUMMARY

The heart-tugging true story of how a baby gorilla found love in the arms of a surrogate mom.

When Umande was born, his mother didn’t know how to take care of him. So, he was hand-reared by keepers at the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo in Colorado Springs. For eight months, the keepers crawled on the ground with him to show him how to walk; coughed in his face to teach him discipline; and gave him happy gorilla grumbles to encourage him. But for Umande, something was still missing. Luckily, a thousand miles away at the Columbus Zoo, a mom was waiting just for him.

This touching true story about finding a family will resonate with animal lovers and adoptive families alike.

ABOUT MY MOM

There aren't enough words in the world to describe how amazing my mom is...
she is caring - beyond caring! Even at my old age, she still makes me call her when I get home so she knows that we got home okay - we live less than 12 minutes away, lol!

My mom is my best friend...
I can tell her anything! ANYTHING!!!
Not that I have... nope, that's a lie! My mom knows everything... except maybe one or two things... which don't even count, because, even if I don't tell her, she knows! She just does - scary thing how moms can do that, lol! But, now that I'm a mom too, I get it... it's a cool power to have ;)

My mom is my role model, I look up to her...
See, with my mom, what you see is what you get!... most of the time ;)
Sometimes she tries to spare our feelings, but, the truth is always best!
She's had her ups and downs, she's not perfect - and I am happy and honored to be able to know my mom so well. I've seen her at her happiest and her saddest... her most angry and disappointed moments too. She does not shy away from real life moments. She is a strong and determined woman and always manages to get things done. She has taught me to embrace the good, and the bad; and that no matter what it is, we can work it out together, because we are never alone.

My mom loves us: my dad, my sister and I, her grandkids, her son-in-laws and so many more... always putting others before herself. Worries more than she should...

Look at her! Isn't she the prettiest mom you've ever seen?!

I cannot imagine a world without her!
She's my mom.

I love you, mami!!! xo

HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY!!!

MY REVIEW

This little gorilla's story will tug at your heartstrings bringing tears to your eyes. The author tells his story with such grace and tenderness, even your little one will understand, feel, the love that went into this book.

When Umande was born, his mom didn't know how to care for him. Even though they were both surrounded by other gorillas, none of the others had ever had any experience with how to handle a baby gorilla, the band did not know how to support and aid the new mother. Umande was left alone and neglected. The zookeepers had to step in and take care of him. Like an infant baby, the zookeepers fed and played with him. They taught him how to play and fend for himself. They loved him as best as they could while they found him a new home, a new family.
Soon enough, Umande is sent to another zoo to hopefully be his new home. They introduce him to Lulu, an experienced mother whose babies have all grown up. Lulu instantly takes a liking to Umande, and within minutes the two start bonding and grow to love one another.
Umande has found a new mom. A new place to call home.

The illustrations perfectly portray Umande's transition and the adoration, warmth and care that he received from his caretakers. You can see and feel the hopes and dreams that they had for Umande to have a happy life, home and family. And of course, we also see the beautiful love between mother and child unfold right before our eyes.

An endearing picture book that will be loved by many... a story to share not only with adoptees and their families, but with anyone. Umande is sure to teach many that hope is never lost, and that thoughtfulness and love can be found.

*I received this book from the author for an honest review. All thoughts are my own.
