SUMMARY

The explosive conclusion to Stacey O’Neale’s award-winning Mortal Enchantment series reveals the secrets of the fantasy world!

Valac has stolen two of the sacred objects. As the Akasha, Kalin has the power to stop him. And she refuses to lose anyone else she loves.

Will she have to sacrifice herself to save them?

Desperate to save Kalin’s life, Rowan searches for the long-lost creator of the mist. But what he finds is the very last thing he expected. Everything he thought he knew about his past is turned upside down, and he questions whether he’s meant to be the savior or the elemental that destroys them all.

Told from Kalin, Rowan, and Marcus’s perspective, the final installment to the series follows their journey of courage, duty, sacrifice, and love.

Tension within the court is at an all-time high. Pressure is mounting for her to ascend to the throne, but a halfling has never ruled over any court. GUEST POST

5 things we don't know about Rowan

1. Rowan was originally the lead in a different series. In that series, he was an archangel.

2. Rowan was the first character I ever created.

3. I only planned to have Rowan's POV in THE SHADOW PRINCE. But once I read readers response to him, I reworked the series. Half of FRAGILE REIGN and ETERNAL SACRIFICE are now told in his POV.

4. Rowan gets compared to Ash from the IRON FEY series a lot. I consider that a HUGE compliment because I am a big Julie Kagawa fan.

5. Rowan is fascinated with the mortal lifestyle. He's into rock music, loves pizza, prefers to wear mortal clothes, and has his eyebrow pierced. The fact that Kalin is half mortal is part of the reason he was initially attracted to her. If Prisma had been a good queen and he was never called back to Avalon, I doubt he would have ever returned. He would've given up immortality to stay in the mortal world.

Thanks for the great topic!

MY REVIEW

FRAGILE REIGN picks up right where we left off...

Just when Kalin thinks that things are going to settle down and she will have time to take in everything that has happened and begins to accept what her immediate future may hold, things start to fall apart again. Kalin is needed now more than ever.
Rowan is out in the mortal world trying to control the chaos that Valac's followers are causing. Luckily for him, Marcus is right by his side, and they make a great team. However, things are far worse then he anticipated. His kingdom has no ruler. And he must decide how to claim it in a way that will stop the war and diminish Valac and Valac's followers.

Oh my, so many things happen in this book!

Kalin and Rowan are both struggling with what they have to do versus what they want to do. It is hard to choose between what is best for their kingdoms and what is best for themselves, their hearts. They have both been through so much and have matured so quickly. Their relationship is just starting to bloom, and yet, there are so many obstacles, will it really be worth the trouble?
And now, with Taron struggling regain his powers, he is heavily relying on Kalin to follow their false plans to buy her time to come into her true powers before becoming queen.
In the meantime, we get acquainted with much loved characters and are introduced to new ones - new faces that will have a huge impact on on Kalin's fate.
We also learn more about Avalon and the elemental's history - very intriguing. I'm sure if the author decided to right a book just on this I would definitely pick it up and enjoy it.

I don't want to divulge into any other details in fear of slipping a few spoilers...

I have to say, Stacey O'Neale really knows how to create characters that I love to hate; she gives her antagonists more depth than just being the enemy with an agenda. There's always more to them, with a deeper meaning - a reason for them to be the way that they are, like it's not their fault, they have to be this way and there's no other way around it. And these characters stick with me! I rarely give a second thought to the bad guys - hardly remember them. Of course I remember their name and their main purpose to the story. But not MORTAL ENCHANTMENT's characters - these make me want to reach into the book and put up a fight right along with the protagonists! They stay with me and completely stress me out... so annoying!

And just when I think that the author couldn't possibly come up with more, she does! And delivers it all beautifully. She has kept me in awe from the very beginning. With a very strong cast of characters, realistic world-building and incredible story development - I cannot wait to see how everything will unfold in the next book!

Those who love fantasy must add this series to their TBR now!

SUMMARY

In Kalin Matthew's world, elementals control the forces of nature. They are divided into four courts: air, woodland, fire, and water. At sixteen she will leave the life she's built with her mortal mother. Kalin will move to Avalon to rule with her father—the elemental king of the air court. Along the way, she's attacked by a fire court assassin and saved by Rowan, a swoon-worthy elemental with a questionable past.

Worst of all, she learns her father is missing.

To rescue him, Kalin will have to work with a judgmental council and a system of courts too busy accusing each other of deceit to actually be able to help her. But, they aren’t her biggest challenge. With the Midwinter’s Ball only five days away, Kalin must take over her father’s duties, which includes shifting control of the elements — power Kalin has yet to realize.

As Rowan attempts to train her, a war looms between the four courts. If Kalin fails, her father will die and the courts will fall, but the betrayal she’s about to uncover may cost her even more.

MY REVIEW

From the minute I opened this book I was completely immersed and lost in it! Fast-paced story, intriguing characters, amazing world building and history - I wasn't able to read fast enough! And with each page, I wanted more and more of everything that was happening...

Right from the start we get to meet Kalin, half mortal and a half air elemental, who has just turned of age and is going to Avalon to rule alongside her father in the air court. Although her father had tried to prepare Kalin for this new world, books and discussions could only teach her so much. Kalin is overly anxious to get this new part of her life started and decides to take matters into her own hands and begins her journey into the woods on her own... and of course, she is completely unprepared for the danger that is waiting for her in the forest. And even more unaware of the mysterious and haughty person who saves her, Rowan. Kalin has been kept in the dark about a lot of political things that have been happening in Avalon, and Rowan is not about to start giving her any lessons. But promises to help her, keep her safe, until they get to the castle. When they finally get there, Kalin's arrival is far less than pleasant. And her father, King Taron, is missing.
Kalin is completely lost when it comes to how the elementals handle these situations. They are harsh and quick to judge. But, she is determined to be heard and is prepared to do what she has to do to take matters into her own hands. It is her father's wish that Kalin rule in the future and she will do what she has to do to honor it. Even if that means stepping in, for now. With no allies, except for the mysterious Rowan. Kalin begins training to learn how to control her own powers as she struggles with who can she trust to help her do what she has to do until she finds her father.

First, Kalin is quite the protagonist - she is fearless and determined. But, she is a bit too quick to jump into things and gives trust when she already knows that she should be questioning everyone's motives. No place is safe for her, she must learn how to use her powers and defend herself. Her father is missing, and her priority is to find him in any way that she can. And the only person she has been able to lean on is the ever so cryptic and egotistical, Rowan. She makes a whole lot of stupid mistakes. I cringed quite a few times. But, understandably, Kalin is just trying to do what she thinks is best in order to keep things in order while everything becomes more and more complicated.

And then, there is Rowan.

Rowan is so broken. After what he has gone through, he continues to do the right thing for Kalin. As things start to unfold and beome more complicated for him. He is still determined to help Kalin, find King Taron and put the elements back in order before a war ignites. Even though everyone is against him, and it is no longer his battle to fight, Rowan still cares about not only his people and Kalin, but the other elementals that involved as well... misunderstood and alone, Rowan struggles to keep his emotions in order whenever he's around Kalin.

There is a lot to learn about this world, and I did learn a lot right alongside Kalin. The layout of their world, how their government works and who rules what with many, many details and history lessons - I was completely immersed into every single letter on the page. Every character is so memorable. Every little detail is so prominent and poignant. If it wasn't for the possible outbreak of war, I would love to visit Avalon... I wish there was a map to go along with the book...

I highly recommend this book to all who are looking for a great fast-paced read; either those who love fantasy, or those that are looking for something a little bit different to dive into - this is definitely your kind of book to read right now!!!

EXCERPT #1: ROWAN

After Marcus left, the lack of sleep and overuse of my power had finally caught up to me. My lids were heavy, making it hard to keep my eyes open. I laid down on the nearest bed, sinking into the softness of the vanilla scented pillows. I could rest here until tomorrow, and then meet Kalin on the beach at sundown. As I closed my eyes, I imagined her in that sexy sundress with the ocean breeze wafting through her red curls. My lips tingled remembering the raspberry taste of her kisses. With all this craziness going on, she was the one thing that made sense. The only person who could make me forget about everything for a little while.
Kalin was the one I wanted. The only one I needed. I shook my head. What was wrong with me? It was too soon to be thinking about this stuff, right? It had only been a few weeks. And what did I know about real feelings, anyway? Had it not been for Marcus, I would never even know what it felt like to care for someone. Love was never part of my life. My mother thought love was a weakness—a totally worthless emotion compared to power and control.

But that still didn’t explain how I was feeling. Why everything seemed better when Kalin was around. Why my fingers ached to touch her. Why her pain shattered me to the core. I put my hands over my face. Or, maybe the lack of sleep was making me delusional. With a smirk, I gave in to the darkness that was overwhelming me and fell asleep.

EXCERPT #2: KALIN

Being betrothed totally sucked. Having powers I couldn’t control sucked. Not being able to help my ailing father sucked. Pretty much everything about my life right now sucked on an epic level of suckage. I forced a smile as I stood beneath the stone archway next to the council members, pretending to be excited to meet Sebastian. The same way I pretended not to notice my decisions were being made for me. Like everything in my life wasn’t out of control and falling to pieces right in front of me.
The mountain wind caught hold of the bottom trim of my yellow full-length gown. I pushed it back down with my gloved hands. The council insisted that our first meeting was to be a formal affair, so I had to dress like I was going to a prom. Ariel, of course, tried to make the best of it. She thought a princess makeover might improve my mood. Unfortunately, all of her efforts combined with the way-too-tight bodice on this gownjust added to my overall disdain.

After speaking with Dad, we decided it was best for him to keep Mom away from all of this. At the moment, I had to go along with the engagement. I was hoping I could gain my akasha powers and never have to tell her about this whole disaster. Although I understood Dad’s motives, I was still pissed that he never told me about the betrothal. There should have been a discussion between us. Lots and lots of them until he saw my side and then changed his mind. An overwhelming sense of despair lingered in the pit of my stomach. If I couldn’t ignite my akasha powers, would I really have to follow through with this and marry a stranger?

Details about the cover, from author Stacey O'Neale:

In case you're curious about the cover, the model represents Marcus.
The background represents the woodland court and the caves at the bottom are where the members of the royal family live. I chose caves because the woodland court protects the forests of the world. I didn't think they would choose to cut down trees to make a castle, so the massive caves worked out nicely. If you zoom in, you can see where the doors and windows are cut out. The inside is very lavish.
If you read FRAGILE REIGN, you'll learn all about it.
