Cover Reveal: GAME ON (Lewis Creek #2) by Michelle Smith (YA)

by Michelle Smith
Expected release date: January 2016
Published by Spencer Hill Contemporary
Genre: Young Adult Contemporary Romance
Format: Paperback, eBook

SUMMARY

Eric Perry is Lewis Creek's resident bad boy. When he’s named the new starting pitcher in a town that thinks baseball is everything and he is nothing but trouble, Eric knows he has to clean up his act. Lay low, his coach tells him—at least long enough to actually pitch a game. But when a fight with his teammate lands him in jail yet again, his season may be over before it starts…until his next door neighbor, Bri, comes to the rescue. Making a deal with Eric's coach, she offers him one final chance at redemption: community service.

Bri Johnson hadn’t talked to Eric in months. Her boyfriend Matt, Eric’s teammate and the school’s golden boy, didn’t like her to be around Eric. Matt didn’t like a lot of things Bri did or said or wore, which is why she ends it with him the same night he and Eric get into a fight—a fight over her. That night is the reason Bri offers to take Eric with her to the community center each week, so he can keep his spot on the team. But spending time with Eric only makes her life worse, as scandalous rumors start flying and Matt refuses to let her move on.

While Eric and Bri work closely together at the center, old stories of stargazing, first kisses, and a time when they were friends start to re-connect them. As they open up their secrets and their hearts to each other, they start to see that they are more than what other people think they are—and even more than what they think about themselves.

He does everything that’s expected of him and plans every detail to ensure he gets the college scholarships that will be his ticket out of the podunk town where he lives. The last thing he needs is an unexpected attraction to Graham, an eyeliner-wearing soccer phenom from St. Louis, who makes him question his choices, his dreams, and his sexuality. Sure, he’d noticed good-looking boys before—that doesn't have to mean anything, right?—after all, he’s got a girlfriend. There’s no room on the agenda for a relationship with Graham. But the harder he fights his feelings for Graham the clearer it becomes that attraction doesn't always follow the rules.

And when family pressures, bad luck, and rumors threaten to derail his carefully laid plans Connor must face the hardest question of all – does he even want the future he’s fighting so hard to create?

Connor rushed into the locker room already unzipping his duffle bag. The Student Council meeting had run behind schedule, making him late for practice. Coach Petrewski didn’t mind his athletes being involved in other activities, but he did expect that if it came to a scheduling conflict, baseball would take precedence. Connor whipped around a bay of lockers and collided with someone. As they fell to the floor in a tangle of arms and legs, Connor twisted his body so he hit the floor first. A sharp elbow knocked into his cheek and he hit his head against the tiled floor.

“Ow! Man, I’m sorry. Are you okay?” He shook his head to clear his vision and he got a look at the person he’d run into. Ice blue eyes rimmed with thick black eyeliner stared down at him.

“Crap!” Connor tried to jerk into a sitting position but Graham’s lanky body draped awkwardly over his. He stopped moving and stared at the other boy. Every cell in his body vibrated. It was like something out of a chick flick. Time stood still and he expected music to swell at any minute, a violin concerto to signify that that this was a Moment. A capital M Moment.

He swallowed hard and tried to moisten his dry mouth.

Graham didn’t speak, apparently caught in the same spell.

He didn’t know how long they lay there, just looking at each other, neither moving. It could have been seconds, minutes or days. What he did know was that, no matter how terrified the thought made him, Connor didn’t want the moment to end.

#HelloFrom World Tour and Cover Reveal: HELLO? by Liza Wiemer (YA)

by Liza Wiemer
Expected release date: October 27th, 2015
Published by Spencer Hill Contemporary
Genre: Young Adult Contemporary
Format: Paperback, eBook

SUMMARY

Late one night, in a moment of deep grief, Tricia places a call to her deceased grandmother’s old phone number. She expects the disconnect notice, but is thrown when another teen— also up late and coping with his own frustrations—answers. It’s Emerson, and though they're perfect strangers, Tricia senses an unexplainable, deeper connection between them.

When his phone rings, Emerson expects it to be his sometimes-overbearing girlfriend Angie, but instead ends up transfixed by Tricia’s tenderness and heartache. The two make a pact, thus setting the events of HELLO? in motion.

HELLO? is the story of five small town Wisconsin teens:
Tricia, who has lost her family and is trying to find her way;
her over-protective boyfriend Brian, a potter;
the perfectionist Emerson;
his girlfriend, the insecure and unpredictable Angie;
and her tough best friend Brenda, an aspiring actress and screenwriter.

Told from all five viewpoints: narration (Tricia), narration (Emerson), free verse poetry (Angie), screenplay format (Brenda), narration and drawings (Brian), HELLO? offers a textured account of five lives and weaves together the stories of these teens into a compelling narrative of serendipity and a whole that is much greater than the sum of its parts.

SUMMARY

Hot girls get the fairy tales. No one cares about the stepsisters' story. Those girls don't get a sweet little ending; they get a lifetime of longing

Imogen Keegen has never had a happily ever after – in fact, she doesn’t think they are possible. Ever since her mother’s death seven years ago, Imogen has pulled herself in and out of therapy, struggled with an “emotionally disturbed” special ed. label, and loathed her perma-plus-sized status.

When Imogen’s new stepsister, the evil and gorgeous Ella Cinder, moves in down the hall, Imogen begins losing grip on the pieces she’s been trying to hold together. The only things that gave her solace – the theatre, cheese fries, and her best friend, Grant – aren’t enough to save her from her pain this time.

While Imogen is enjoying her moment in the spotlight after the high school musical, the journal pages containing her darkest thoughts get put on display. Now, Imogen must resign herself to be crushed under the ever-increasing weight of her pain, or finally accept the starring role in her own life story.

And maybe even find herself a happily ever after.

Enhance the experience with the companion soundtrack, Imogen Unlocked, by the author's band, Wedding Day Rain.

MY REVIEW

I went into this book thinking it was going to be a funny, quick, light-read; a sweet contemporary to breeze through with a touch of high school drama, first love and a happily ever after... I was so wrong. And, for me, this was really good, with a little bad. I'll explain why in a minute...

Imogen is trying to hold her life together in the best way that she can. Her life has been in turmoil ever since her mother passed away. She continues to deal with her grief. Along with her depression and weight. With her best friend, Grant, always by her side. As bad as things can get, she always manages to pull through and get by. Until her father remarries and she meets her stepmother and stepsister. Something happens to Imogen that is hard to put into words, that is difficult to watch unfold and just rips your heart into pieces. Time goes on, and Imogen is once again back to where she was before. Just trying to get by. Until she's told that her stepsister is actually going to come and live with them now. Once again, Imogen does not know how to handle this and just tries to keep her head above water. With her best friend, and new friends by her side, maybe this time she won't be alone. Maybe this time, someone will be there to hold her hand. To help her get through her story. And maybe that happy ending.

I truly appreciated the fact that the author not only tackled some very hard issues - depression, anxiety, self-harm, loss of a family member - and did so thoughtfully and tactful. But that she also gave us some outstanding and memorable characters -  it's one of the things that I truly liked about his book; all of  Imogen's relationships with everyone, except for the obvious one with her step-sister. The author really brought in an array of diffrent characters, and developed such amazing connections between all of them. Some where not so strong, but grew with patience, love and understanding. Some where almost unbelievable, but with flashbacks and history, grew to be the most fascinating relationships to follow and cheer for. These characters kept me invested in Imogen's story and hoping for the best things for everyone involved in it.

I truly wished that I had read a finished paperback copy. It is often difficult for me to really feel engaged in a story when I read it on my ereader or phone. Especially when there are illustrations that I would have liked to have lingered on, and moments in the book that I would have probably flipped back to to reread. Plus, the cover at first glance is truly beautiful, but upon further inspection, I can see the hidden meaning behind the illustrations. Something I would have noticed right away if I had seen it in person.

If you're looking for a book that will effect you, make you think and look beyond the surface, this is definitely one you will want to pick up.

The war rages inside me. I want fight or flight to take over, but there’s a third option in this scenario — surrender.

His lips hover centimeters over my mouth and his shadow weighs on me like he’s pressed against my body. He leans one forearm against the wall next to my head. His other hand remains flat against the wall above my shoulder.

My thoughts jumble together in my mind. I need to get away from here, away from him.

But my heart won’t let go.

Part of me wants to be this close to him. The smell of his cologne mixes with the smell of sweat from the studios. I chose to leave my past behind when I left New York. I want to start over, but if he’s only after me for this game, it won’t be a fresh start. It’ll be a replay of the pain I’ve already experienced. Except it’ll be worse.

I stay—physically locked by his arms, mentally locked by his gaze, confused about what I want and what I should do. He sighs and closes his eyes. His lips graze my temple and then his breath is on my ear.

“I won’t kiss you while you’re attached to someone else, but do me a favor?” he asks, a smile playing at his lips.

“What?” My voice wavers, a combination of panic and attraction.

“Tell your boyfriend he’s got competition.”

REVIEW

Nikki Urang really knows how to tell a good story that I just couldn't put down! Regardless of how I felt about the characters, from beginning to end, I was completely committed to finding out what was going to happen to everyone... even though I have no knowledge of any sort in regards to professional ballet, dance, tap, etc. The author gave me just enough info to understand what the characters were doing and what they were trying to accomplish without missing a moment or lacking in the stories momentum.

After having her heart ripped apart and recovering from a dance injury, both faulted by her old dance partner back in New York, Sadie moves to L.A. to try to get a fresh start and pick up where she left off, without a dance partner. However, life can never be that easy... but she's determine to do what she has to do to stay on top, with no strings attached to her old life and without creating any new ones in her new life, she is going to work as hard as she can to prove to herself and her instructors that she is the best. With high hopes to not only make it into the Fall Showcase where she'll be able to perform in front of some of the biggest talent scouts, with the hopes of landing her dream job, but also win a scholarship of sorts to go to London, Sadie will only trust in herself to accomplish her dreams.
But the instructors and department heads have made other plans. Everyone must be partnered in order to audition for the Fall Showcase. Not only that, someone has started a "Hit List", a game where guys try to hit on and score with the top 10 girls on the list. And Sadie, who just wants to be left alone, is on the top of that list.
And then Luke happens.
Not only is Luke the biggest player on campus, his parents are also prominent figures at the school, but he has just been assigned to be Sadie's partner.
Sadie has only been on campus for just a few short days, and she is completely overwhelmed and is starting to have panic attacks. How will she ever get over her trust issues in time to impress her peers and make her dreams come true???

The main issue between Sadie and Luke is communication. The back-and-forth banter, the hot-and-cold mood swings usually would cause me to say enough already, let's move on. However, for Sadie and Luke's story, it works. Every moment that they had together, good or bad, made them reflect and grow as individuals. Everyone's made mistakes. And they learn to accept theirs, each others, and more. It was really refreshing to see such honest and raw character development.
Also, Sadie was completely shattered not only by her ex-partner's, Patrick, betrayal and his involvement in her injury, but also, the fact that he was the only constant trust that she had in her life since her father past away and her mother blocked her out, is completely understandable and heartbreaking. At times, she seems a bit whiny and too quick to place 100% percent blame on Patrick. But, being that she was so young, so in love, and so trusting, one can understand that this was an extremely traumatic experience and time for her. And no one can truly understand her emotions unless they had physically and mentally went through what she had to go through, alone.

Again, the author has definitely created some memorable characters in THE HIT LIST. I highly recommend it - a good quick weekend read you won't regret!

The first notes of the music start and I do my best to look like I’m waiting on a park bench for the love of my life. It’s not a stretch to be attracted to Luke. He walks toward me and I launch myself off the chair, running full speed at him, jumping into his arms at the last possible second. His touch is warm against my leg and back. He holds me tight, tighter than he’s held me in rehearsal before. I want to believe it’s because he might like me as more than a partner, but really it’s probably so he won’t drop me.

He spins me around once and tries to disentangle my limbs from his body. I don’t want to let go. He sets me back down on the ground and keeps me at arms length while I attempt to grab his hand. He pulls it away effortlessly every time.

This is supposed to be the part when he breaks up with me. But I can see him working hard to hide his emotions. Like maybe he doesn’t want to let me go, either. But that’s not part of the dance.

He stops dancing. “What’s wrong?”

“I could ask you the same thing. You don’t really look like you’re about to break up with me.”

He stops the music and crosses his arms over his chest.  “Well, you don’t really look like you’re in love, so we’re even.”

“Did you just verb the word science?”

“Yes, Grant. I did.”

They’ve been lying from the start. From the first time we hear the words “once upon a time,” we’re fed the idea that these girls — these gorgeous, demure, singing-with-the-wildlife girls — get a happy ending. And I get it. Poor thing had to do some chores around the house, fine. But the idea that she needs a magic old lady to come down and skim off the dirt so the prince will see her beauty? That’s ridiculous. Maybe she should have been working on her lockpicking skills instead of serenading squirrels. She could have busted out, hitched a ride to the castle, and impressed the prince with her safe-cracking prowess.

Sorry, magic-fairy lady. She didn’t need your help. The deck’s already stacked in her favor. Why? Because she’s the golden girl. She’s the star. No one cares about the stepsisters’ stories. Those girls don’t get a sweet little ending. They get a lifetime of longing.

Seriously.

Hot girls get the fairy tales.

Hot girls like my stepsister.

INTERVIEW

1. Describe your book in ten words or less. Go!

Raw, sassy, swoony, hopeful, dramatic.

2. Where did you get the idea for DAMSEL DISTRESSED?

DAMSEL DISTRESSED was inspired by so many things. Some of it came from my own experiences as a teenager, and other moments were inspired by my friends. Still other facets of the story and characters were shaped by my experiences as a teacher in high school and middle school. There are little whispers of so many lives on the pages of my book and I hope that everyone who reads it finds a little sliver of their own experiences in the words.

3. DAMSEL DISTRESSED touches on several sensitive topics. What made you write a book about body image and self-harm? What do you hope your readers will take away from it

In school, I was never thin. I may have been average, in reality, but the feeling of being bigger than all my friends was real. In adulthood, my own emotional eating resulted in weight gain that eventually lead me to an unhealthy weight for my size, which was brought to my attention during a health screening.
I have definitely experienced a complicated, and sometimes, painful relationship with food and body image. When I was younger (and even as I got older), those emotions were often fundamental in how I saw myself, and I wanted to express that experience through Imogen.
The other side of Imogen's primary problems exist in the realm of mental health issues. I am a vocal advocate for the destigmatization of mental health needs and care. I have spent most of my career as a teacher working with young people who have emotional/behavioral difficulties.
Sometimes, it seems like the hardest part of living with depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, or any number of other conditions, is that those who haven't experienced it rarely understand the complexities involved in recovery.
There are no easy solutions, you know? It can be hard in YA to write a character and keep the readership from saying/thinking, "Oh my gosh. Stop whining! Go get some Xanax and get on with it." But those types of oversimplifications are damaging and hurtful to the real young people that out characters represent.

4. Theatre is an important part of Imogen's life. How does being in theatre help her? If she didn't have theatre, what would it mean for her?

Theatre, for Imogen, is an anchor. Her mother was involved in theatre, so her connection is in part a way to hang on and not let go even though it's been 5 years since Mom's death. Beyond the connection to her mother, however, Imogen feels at home in the sound booth (her theatre work of choice is running sound, not being on stage) because it allows her to connect to other people in a real and meaningful way, but also allows her the space to be in her own head and watch from a safe distance.
Theatre is such a wonderful part of development for so many young people and adult (including myself), and it was very exciting for me to honor that work with my book.

5. DAMSEL DISTRESSED is going to accompanied by Imogen Unlocked, a "soundtrack of original songs written and performed by Wedding Day Rain." What do you like most about having a companion album? In what ways does it allow the reader to dive deeper into Imogen's head?

Having a soundtrack for this book was a weird, crazy, ambitious idea, but now that it's done, I can't imagine my book without the songs that accompany it.
The songs come after critical scenes, and in most cases, the songs directly continue the emotional weight of that chapter.
I like to think of the book as Imogen's thoughts, as she is aware of them, and the songs as the things she doesn't even know she's got swirling around in her head.

6. Craziest thing you've had to Google for a work in progress?

My research on compulsion disorders and self-harming behaviors was incredibly enlightening, and necessary. However, it was also incredibly difficult and emotional for me to study, because I can't help but think about the individuals who live with the burdens of these issues every day.

CD BLURB

Damsel Distressed is the story of Imogen, a girl who's survived the years after her mother's death by focusing squarely on her best friend, Grant, musical theatre, and lots of cheese. The book is full of humor and heart, and also contains a few surprises. Full page sketches are scattered throughout the novel, and each one contains a QR code that corresponds to a song from the book's soundtrack. Imogen Unlocked is a 12-song album of original music written by the author and her husband Daron as their indie-pop band, Wedding Day Rain. Together, the book Damsel Distressed and the soundtrack Imogen Unlocked work together to tell the story of a girl who might just make her own Happily Ever After, if she can just hold herself together.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR - Kelsey Macke

Kelsey Macke has been creative for as long as she can remember. From an early age she was on stage singing, penning poetry, and writing notebooks full of songs. When the idea for her debut novel, DAMSEL DISTRESSED, popped into her head, she was undeterred by the fact that she had no idea how to actually write a novel. Her bff, the internet, was her guide, and after much trial, error, and candy, she finished it, and set out to get it published… a process far more difficult than, the internet (now her mortal enemy), had lead her to believe.
Her whirlwind adventure was made even more unbelievable when she signed with fabulous agent, Jessica Sinsheimer of the Sarah Jane Freymann Literary Agency and, shortly after, Danielle Ellison of Spencer Hill Contemporary bought her debut.
This innovative, mixed-media art project has given Kelsey an incredibly unique opportunity to join two of her passions: writing and making music with her husband as half of the folky, indie-pop band Wedding Day Rain.

DAMSEL DISTRESSED, and the companion album of original songs, Imogen Unlocked, are scheduled for release in October 2014.
