MY REVIEW

Another amazing story from one of my favorite authors! Laurie Boyle Crompton has a gift for creating strong female characters, realistic and relatable relationships and swift story-lines...

Dyna is an adrenaline junkie - without a second thought, Dyna throws herself into the most life-threatening adventures you can ever think of. It's in her blood; her parents are hippie-like seize-the-day on-the-whim, and her brother is an avid mountain biker and sky-diver. Dyna loves nature and all the hidden thrills in it and beyond... until one day, while on a personal dare and mischievous high, while flirting with a cute boy from school that she found on the bike trail, she miscalculates her latest show-off adventure and suffers a tragic fall.
During the tragedy and while in the hospital, there is an instant connection between Dyna and her flirt from the tail, also her rescuer, Jay. Jay is exactly who Dyna needs right now to keep her grounded and safe. They click together; Dyna needs someone who is grounded and likes to play by the rules. Dyna depends on him to help her stay calm, focused and out of trouble. Because of Dyna's injuries and traumatic experience, Dyna's mother has decided that she cannot go back to school - she will be home schooled so she can concentrate on healing. However, due to her mother's unconventional ways, the rehab center a sort of new age wellness center that will not only focus on helping her heal physically, but mentally as well, by attending group sessions with other who have also had traumatic accidents that have left them with fears and doubts. And this is where Dyna meets Pierce.
Pierce is unlike any other person Dyna has met. Inspite of the ghosts that haunt him, he emits a carefree way of being - he remains strong and dependable. Yet, we catch brief moments of Pierce's vulnerability and wariness. His struggles are real, and heartwrenching. Dyna can't help herself, she is pulled to him for so many reasons.
Now Dyna's biggest struggle is with herself - will she stay safely grounded and never attempt fate again? Or will she allow herself to comes natural to her and find a way to seize the moment and live up to her family's motto again?

Although the book is extremely short and a really quick read, the author is able to give us Dyna's whole story without missing out on any important details. The beginning of the story, we see Dyna on a bike racing through the woods without a care in the world - the woods is all hers to rule and there is nothing that will keep her away from it. Nothing that will take her away from the thrill of being out there and seizing every opportunity to feel that adrenaline rush. I was able to feel that rush! I was nervous for her - worried, scared. With every dare that she took, every little dangerous move that she made and her unforgettable accident was heart stopping - I felt it and lived it with her.
Also, the relationships between all the characters, especially between Dyna and her family members, were so spot on and believable. And the way that Dyna was torn between Jay her protector versus Pierce her antagonist - it was amazing to me how different Jay and Pierce are, and how Dyna was able to relate to both and find strength within both relationships. And all that without the typical love-triangle that everyone seems to cringe upon. This was really well developed and all was accomplished in less than 200 pages.

I highly recommend this quick page-turner to all contemporary lovers (especially to those who like Trish Doller's writing) and adrenaline junkies! This is definitely one book not to miss out on!

*An ARC was sent to me by the publisher for an honest review. All thoughts are my own.

Blog Tour: Real Prom Queens Meets Reality TV in Laurie Boyle Crompton's latest book - THE REAL PROM QUEENS OF WESTFIELD HIGH (YA)

Good afternoon!
I am really happy to be a part of Sourcebooks blog tour today for Laurie Boyle Cromptons' soon to be release, The Real Prom Queens of Westfield High!
Today Ms. Crompton and I are sharing our 'reality television guilty pleasure'...

by Laurie Boyle Crompton
Expected release date: February 4th, 2014
Published by: Sourcebooks Fire
Genre: Young Adult Contemporary
Format read: eARC

SUMMARY

Shannon has never lived down her very public, most embarrassing moment, so it is no shock when she is voted least likely to be prom queen at Westfield High. That is, until she’s selected to co-star in a hidden-camera reality show, The Prom Queen Wannabees, and undergoes a complete makeover, sponsored by NĊ‘realique Cosmetics. Shannon must battle to be elected Prom Queen and snag the One! Million! Dollar! prize.

After a dramatic make-over, Shannon and two other Wannabes enter senior year: now the social hierarchy of the entire class is about to be turned upside down. Shannon’s helpful new Life Coach declares her BFF a “popularity liability” and orders her to cease flirting with the class science geek in favor of the beefcake quarterback (his muscles would make the perfect prom accessory!).

Meanwhile, the former front-runners for Prom Queen start having serious bad luck. But when Shannon uncovers proof that the beauty business can be awfully ugly, she must find a way to show her BFF and one true crush that underneath that fabulous makeover, she really hasn’t changed. The battle is on, the French-manicured claws are out, and the live! finale on Prom Night promises to shock everyone’s corsages off.

Here's what Ms. Crompton's has to share with us...

My reality TV guilty pleasure would have to be America’s Next Top Model. I’ve seen nearly every episode of all twenty cycles and I’m afraid to figure out how many viewing hours that adds up to (plus, yanno… math). But I can tell you it’s a significant portion of my life that I can never reclaim. My family will sometimes watch the singing competition shows together and that’s all very fun and social, but I watch ANTM alone and in the dark. If anyone walks in while it’s on, I shield my face and call out, “Don’t look at me.” At least when I was writing THE REAL PROM QUEENS I could tell people, “It’s research! Stop judging me.” But now that the book is finished I really have no excuse.

In THE REAL PROM QUEENS the main character, Shannon, gets caught on camera taking a big spill off of a runway and I can think of so many contestants over the various cycles of ANTM who’ve had similar embarrassing mishaps. There have been stiletto twists that resulted in sprained ankles and numerous cases of dehydration and panic attacks requiring hospitalization. One recent makeover episode actually resulted in a girl getting her face burned by a curling iron. Fear Factor has nothing on these ladies!

I think the show that Shannon ends up on, THE PROM QUEEN WANNABES, would actually be a lot of fun to watch. Prom Queen Camp is just the beginning of the reality TV spectacle that would definitely qualify as guilty pleasure viewing if it existed!

My confession...

I always tell people that I don't watch much tv, let alone, have the time to watch any of this reality tv nonsense... however, I must come clean! I am a closet REAL HOUSEWIVES fanatic!!! I am! {sobs!}
I cannot get enough of these egotistical snobs! They are so comical to me! And the majority have absolutely no clue at all as to what reality truly is. Sometimes I feel bad for them... I do... sometimes!
My favorites are those local to me, Housewives of New Jersey and NYC... I watch them whenever I can get a chance to!
Now if only they can cast a Real Housewives of Long Island, lol! or maybe now, I'd probably turn into a stalker! Eeep!

But if you ask me in public anything about this, or anything related to this, I will deny it all! I will!
{Runs aways and hides in closet!}

*Thank you so very much Ms. Crompton for stopping by and sharing your 'guilty reality tv pleasure' with us today!
And a big thank you to Sourcebooks for making it happen!

MY REVIEW

If you love drama, drama and more drama, comedy and a side of reality thrown at you, then this is definitely your kind of read! Ms. Crompton has a gift for creating realistic and likeable characters...

Our main character Shannon is not having the best of high school experiences - especially with a nickname like 'Elf Ucker'. She does her best to keep herself under the radar and out of the spotlight from the 'mean girls'... until her worst fears become a reality: she is voted most UNLIKELY to become prom queen. She knew things were bad, but not that bad. So when a very popular cosmetics company approaches her, and the other 2 girls most unlikely to become prom queens, to star on a reality show much like America's Next Top Model - how can she say no! How can anybody say no to a makeover, expensive clothes, new car, life coaches and the chance to win a million dollars?? It will give her the opportunity to finally become and have what she's always thought she wanted.
Will her dreams come true?
Will she win the boy of her dreams?
Will she become the prom queen?
Or, will reality become, for lack of a better word, reality!

Shannon and what the other girls go through are exactly what we've seen on reality tv with over-the-top dramatization, back-stabbing and lots of boo-hooing; but, we also get to see the other side to what these girls actually go through - the emotional breakdowns and breakthroughs, the manipulation of what the producers want you to see versus what actually happened, how these girls grow and mature for the worse and then the better and so much more. Such a page turner!

A very fun, quirky, quick read for the younger YA audience!
Definitely a book to dive into - thought provoking with good laugh out loud moments!

#GeekGrlzRevenge Blog Tour: Blaze by Laurie Boyle Crompton (Guest Post and Illustration Sneak Peek)

Good-morning, book nerds :)
I am SO excited to be a part of the #GeekGrlzRevenge Blog Tour today!!!
Laurie Boyle Crompton, debut author to the soon-to-be released Blaze, has stopped by today with an awesome guest post about why the main character, Blaze, is "Comic Book Cool"...
ALSO, please scroll down to get a peek at some of the art that you will find in the book too!!!

Why My Character is... Comic Book Cool
by Laurie Boyle Crompton

Blaze’s character showed up in my mind like Blam! Pow! “Tell my story!”
She’s really into comics and is sort of stuck in her life as an outsider, but she isn't ashamed of being a geek. She displays her superhero buttons proudly and is constantly drawing and reading comics. I couldn't wait to write about her. Of course, working on a project where studying comic books counted as research was a bonus!
My step-father has this Ah-mazing! collection much like the one Blaze’s dad has in the book and I remember staying up late at night reading through stacks of them as a kid. I would try to tell my friends about these awesome characters like the Silver Surfer and Iron Man, and I’d even try to imitate Thor’s Norse God way of speaking. This was before the movies made these guys more mainstream and I was definitely on the fringe with my obsession, but when I’d find another comic book nerd we had an instant bond.
As I was writing, Blaze surprised me when she fought back against Mark the way she did and I knew at that point I could just allow her character to take over. Of course things don’t go as she plans, but no matter what tight spots she finds herself in, she uses comic books to guide and empower her. Readers who aren't into comic books will definitely still enjoy Blaze, but my hope is that she will inspire them to check out comics for themselves, too!

(or Love in the Time of Supervillains)
by Laurie Boyle Crompton
Expected release date: February 1st, 2013
Published by: Sourcebooks Fire
Genre: Young Adult

SUMMARY

Blaze is tired of spending her life on the sidelines, drawing comics and feeling invisible. She's desperate for soccer star Mark to notice her.
And when her BFF texts Mark a photo of Blaze in sexy lingerie, it definitely gets his attention.

After a hot date in the back of her minivan, Blaze is flying high, but suddenly Mark's feelings seem to have been blasted by a freeze-ray gun, and he dumps her.
Blaze gets her revenge by posting a comic strip featuring uber-villain Mark the Shark. Mark then retaliates by posting her "sext" photo, and, overnight, Blaze goes from Super Virgin Girl to Super Slut.

That life on the sidelines is looking pretty good right about now.

Here's a sneak peek of the illustrations that you can expect to see in BLAZE!!!

I am very pleased to introduce you to... Blazing Goddess!!!
Blaze's alter-ego comic book superhero :)

MY REVIEW

Simple, yet riveting, Blaze should be on everyone's to-be-read piles and wishlists! Laurie Boyle Crompton has written an amazing debut full of teen angst, girl-power and geek fandom!

Blaze is a 17-year-old comic-book-geek girly-girl who is smart, snark-y and has a huge heart. Her father has taken off to NYC to pursue his acting career which has left her mother a bit bitter and overworked, so Blaze has had to step-up, pitch-in and play "soccer mom" to her 13-year-old brother and his friends. Since most of her free time is taken up by her brother's soccer practices and games, she  spends the time reading her comic books, working on her own comic book stories starring Blazing Goddess, her alter-ego, and dreaming about Mark the soccer coach.
And then one day, Mark acknowledges Blaze's existence and Blaze's crush soars into space and she is determined to do whatever it takes to make Mark her boyfriend.
While out shopping one day with her friends, Blaze is trying to get their advice as to what she should do to get Mark to realize that she is the one he wants as his girlfriend; in the spur of the moment, her bestie snaps an unforgettable cell phone picture and sends it off to Mark.
Of course she has his attention now....
And then she learns, that being super-geeky-boring girl wasn't so bad after all.

Well, this book brought back all kinds of high school memories. Although, thank goodness, I never went through any of the bad stuff that Blaze had to endure, I do remember what it was like to have a crush and feel like it would be the end of the world if I couldn't make him mine. Even in my old age now, it is an indescribable feeling to have such a strong need to want someone to like you back as much as you think you like them. You barely know the person, personally. Yes, you see what he likes/dislikes in school, know his schedule by heart, who he's friends with, etc. But you don't really know his personality, what he's like at home, his family, etc. But for some odd reason, you just don't care. He's cute, you like him and no one can convince you otherwise. The things that some girls will go through to prove that they are worthy of a boys attention is heartbreaking.

I love Laurie's writing style; Blazes personality shines through - I felt her loneliness, anger, hurt, snark. I loved every single time she geeked-out about comic books and that she used her talent to release her feelings. I adored the way she and her brother, Josh, cared and took care of each other - the relationship that they both had with Josh's friends was amazing and so genuine. I loved how they kidded around with each other, but mostly, how these group of boys looked up to Blaze like she was their big sister too.

Plus, all of the comic book mentions (Blaze is a hardcore Marvel fan!) were so fitting and perfect! The ARC did not have any of the illustrations, so I'm sure that with the artwork included this book would easily become a 5-star rating for me.
A definite must read for all booknerds, geeks, comic book hero fans and more! Can't wait to get my hands on a finished copy!
