SUMMARY

Children can have a cruel, absolute sense of justice. Children can kill a monster and feel quite proud of themselves. A girl can look at her brother and believe they’re destined to be a knight and a bard who battle evil. She can believe she’s found the thing she’s been made for.

Hazel lives with her brother, Ben, in the strange town of Fairfold where humans and fae exist side by side. The faeries’ seemingly harmless magic attracts tourists, but Hazel knows how dangerous they can be, and she knows how to stop them. Or she did, once.

At the center of it all, there is a glass coffin in the woods. It rests right on the ground and in it sleeps a boy with horns on his head and ears as pointed as knives. Hazel and Ben were both in love with him as children. The boy has slept there for generations, never waking.

Until one day, he does…

As the world turns upside down, Hazel tries to remember her years pretending to be a knight. But swept up in new love, shifting loyalties, and the fresh sting of betrayal, will it be enough?

BOOK TRAILER - The Darkest Part of the Forest by Holly Black

MY REVIEW

Holly Black's storytelling is magical... an imaginable story that starts as a pleasant whimsical fairytale with lots of particulars and storytelling, with a few twists, turns and revelations, it quickly turns into a creepy and unpredictable fae story; one full of alluring characters and fascinating but eerie monsters.

The residents of Fairfold know that the fae are real. Faeries live among them. All the stories that are told are true. There's a boy, with horns, that lays asleep in a glass coffin in the middle of their woods. Tourists travel here to see the boy, to experience the magic within their town. But the tourists don't truly believe and are careless. Oftentimes, they are victims to the faes trickeries. The locals know how to protect themselves and avoid their deceiving games. They know how to stay away from the fae, unless they are willing to pay a heavy price.

Hazel and her brother, Ben, have been running amok in Fairfold's woods since they were able to toddle. They know about the fae. They have heard all the stories. They have even been blessed by one, or cursed, depends on how you want to look upon it. Hazel and Ben are no strangers to these mystical creatures. They have seen them. They have fought them. They create stories of their own, and they dream about their prince - waking up, and falling in love with him. They are strong-willed and believe that they are ready for the day that their dreams will come true.

Be careful for what you wish for...

Hazel is stubborn, strong-willed and very independent. Her relationship with Ben is almost twin-like. They are inseparable, loyal and untouchable. Nothing can separate them.
Until Hazel makes a deal.
Some questionable things begin to happen.
Cryptic warnings. Secrets.
The boy in the casket disappears.
The monster in the woods is getting closer and closer to the edge...

"There’s a monster in our wood.
She’ll get you if you’re not good.
Drag you under leaves and sticks.
Punish you for all your tricks.
A nest of hair and gnawed bone.
You are never, ever coming… "

The complex relationship between each character mentioned in the entire book is amazing! The author goes over and beyond creating such complex, realistic connections between each one. There isn't one that I could possibly question their motive or intentions - even the most evilest one had their reasons for being. Every written word is captivating and thinkable. The entire book ran like a movie through my mind. Brilliant. The only way to describe it. Absolutely brilliant.

Ohhh, and I cannot fail to mention... the romance! The diversity! The sacrifice! The fight! And the all the strange things that will unfold into a bewitching story never to be forgotten.

THE DARKEST PART OF THE FOREST, to me, felt like a twisted modern-day retelling of Sleeping Beauty and King Arthur's knights. Obviously, those who love faeries and fairytales will be lured into this new story... but those of you who shy away from these sort of tales - you must find the courage to enter into the woods and find your path, trust me, you will most definitely find yourself entranced by the prince's story, narration and the different meanings of love and loyalty.

*An ARC was won in a giveaway by the publisher for an honest review. All thoughts are my own.

TEASER

Halloween night, Cara woke often and thrashed about during nightmares filled with blonde witches, black-eyed demons, and sea monsters with giant white teeth. Seaside students had Friday off, but rather than staying in bed, she gave up the battle for rest while the sky was still black outside her bedroom window. She might be sleep-deprived, but she had big plans for the day.

He stepped closer to her. "I hadn't planned to get involved with you during the school year." He tapped her nose with his finger. "At first, I decided to wait until the summer to see if you were still interested. I knew you'd be leaving for college, so I figured if I moved to Seattle, I'd have time to try to win you over."

She couldn't believe she was hearing such magical - no - providential words.

Have you read it already???
If not, what are you most excited for???

MOVIE TRAILER for BIG EYES

MY THOUGHTS

WHY am I just hearing about this movie now?!?!

Keane 1962
These tremendously wide-eye doll-like children have caught my eye ever since I can remember. As a kid and teen, I always wondered who this artist was and what the meaning behind these pictures were... as I got older and finally learned of the artists dramatic life, the majority of her pieces are still a wonder and have never fully been discussed.

I have seen a lot of artist that have been influenced by Margaret Keane's work...
there is something completely mesmerizing, and sometimes eerie, when you look at those doe-eyed dolls from this early period of time in her life.
Her current work has a more cutesy and happier tone. To be honest, I am more drawn to her earlier pieces. There is so much to be found and said with those pieces...

I adore Amy Adams, and think that this role suits her well!

I am really looking forward to watching this really soon!!!

Have you seen it??? Heard of it???

Review: SUPERTRUCK by Stephen Savage (C)

by Stephen Savage
Release date: January 6th, 2015
Published by: Roaring Brook Press (Macmillan)
Genre: Children's Picture Book
Format: Hardcover, eBook
Format read: ARC from the publisher

SUMMARY

When the city is hit by a colossal snowstorm, only one superhero can save the day.

But who is this mysterious hero, and why does he disappear once his job is done?

Find out in this snowy tale about a little truck with a very big job,
the second of Steve Savage's vehicle-based picture books.

MY REVIEW

In this charming little book, we learn about all the important and hardworking vehicles that move around our cities and towns, helping us in many ways, always getting their jobs done no matter what the season is. The fire truck puts out fires, the tow truck rescues cars... and the garbage truck, well, he just collects the trash.

But, who will help them all when a terrible blizzard storms in and the whole city has to come to a complete standstill??? SUPERTRUCK to the rescue!!!
All the trucks, big and small, are stuck and cannot complete their jobs. But Supertruck puts on his plow and digs the whole city out! The other trucks are so grateful... and wonder, who is this marvelous vehicle?

First of all, the cuteness starts with brightly colored and captivating illustrations. Each page is filled to the brim with minimalist drawings and colors, giving each vehicle its most known quality shape and color to stand out and easily be identifiable.
Second, the simple storyline is quite engaging. After the first few reads, my one year old scramble off to go find his trucks - not only did we match most of them to the pictures in the book, but we also played and made sure to give Supertruck time to cover his identity, just like Superman. I adore books that encourage my kids to get up and play while reading it!
And lastly, who doesn't love a good superhero!!!

A sweet book for the little superhero/comic book lover in your family!

*An ARC copy was sent to me from the publisher for an honest review. All thoughts are my own.

TEASER

"I think about those fairy tales Mom used to tell me, the ones about the changelings, where fairies would take a human child because they found it beautiful, and replace it with a fairy baby. Right now, though, it feels like Mom is the changeling, like she's been taken away and replaced with some other mother, some simulacrum, some clockwork woman." ~ ARC, page 87

"These dreams have been getting way too weird, too real, for my liking. I can still feel the knife in my hand - the one Mom doesn't seem able to see." ~ ARC, page 204

And the characters were more than I expected! I loved every single word! I need book 2 soon!!!

14. TOP TEN CLUES YOU'RE CLUELESS by Liz Czukas (YA) - I thought that this was going to be a quick fluffy book to read during Christmas - although, there was a ton of humor and a sweet blooming little romance going on in the background - it was so much more! My 2015 Reading Goals and Challenges (THE POPSUGAR 2015 READING CHALLENGE)

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!
I hope you all had an amazing New Year's Eve and Day :)
Here's to many, many wonderful bookish things to come!!!

Just like everyone else in the book-world, I have some bookish goals and reading challenges I would like to do and accomplish for this new year :)

Here we go...

First, I decided to do the Goodreads 2015 Reading Challenge again!
Just like last year, I am challenging myself to read 120 books. That means I would have to try to read around 10 books per month. However... I don't limit myself to what kind of books, how many pages, genres, etc. I include everything that I plan on writing a review for. Which means, I should be posting 1 to 3 reviews per week. I think that this is something that I can keep up with and accomplish this year ;)

Secondly, I decided that I am not going to be participating in the challenges that I usually sign up for every year. In the last 2 years, I have dedicated a page on my blog to try to keep track of other reading challenges, such as the Standalone Reading Challenge and the TBR Reading Challenge, amongst others; and I always failed at not only reading the books to meet those challenges, but keeping track of the few that I did read as well. I think that I am going to go back to "quality vs. quantity" and just read!

BUT, there are two challenges that won't require me to do much upkeeping, so I shall try to follow through with them!

The first is to continue on with The Rory Gilmore Reading Challenge!
I have read 49 out of Rory's 341 books so far.
This challenge will help me get back on track with what I've been wanting to do for ages - read more classics! I own quite a few already that I have yet to read. And I hope to read one per month.

There are 50 prompts!!! Which means I have to read 50 books for this challenge!!!
I have selected a few books that I already have and really want to read this year for some of them. The others will be filled in as I find books that fit my mood - I want to try to keep this challenge for books that I already own (or plan on owning)... I don't think it will be too difficult to fill all of these in, especially since my goal is to read approx. 120 books this year... regardless, it's definitely going to be a lot of fun!!!
