Bumbles and Fairy-Tales Updates and Book Haul #57

HELLO my booknerd friends!!!
I hope you have all been doing well - and definitely a lot better than what has been going on around here, lol!... February is too much of a short month to have so many things go wrong! I started it out with a really bad case of the flu :p I ended up having to go to the ER to be rehydrated and stuff. Definitely not fun. It took me about 8 days overall to get through it and start feeling better - it's so hard to read and do anything when you feel so crummy. And then of course, the germs were passed around all the family members for the last 3 weeks. Not fun at all!
I have fallen behind again on blogging and reading. But I have decided that I can no longer put the pressure that I put on myself. This is a hobby. My most favorite thing to do for myself. I need to get back to it being fun again :) Which means that I need to do what I can do and go back to posting 3 or 4 times per week rather than the 6 or more that I was trying to accomplish; and lower my reading expectations back to reading one book per week rather than forcing myself to losing sleep in order to read the 2 to 3 books I did last month.
I feel like a huge weight was just lifted off my brain :)

Here's what's been happening around here... lots of cover reveals and bookish stuff ;)

So far, Albert’s mastered the art of not mastering his Tile....

With the situation in Calderon growing worse every day, can Albert, Leroy, and Birdie restore balance before New York is destroyed forever?
Will Albert master his Tile before it’s too late?

Perfect for fans of Percy Jackson, The Unwanteds,

MY THOUGHTS

This sounds amazing!!! Definitely a book that both my boys would love to read -
they just started the Percy Jackson series and are mesmerized with the books, and movies too!
We just picked up The Unwanteds not too long ago and hope to read it soon!

The cover is wonderfully illustrated and has already caught my son's attention; and, of course, being the organized 10 year old that he is, he has already added this to his wishlist - release date and all, lol!!!

Can't wait!!!

SUMMARY

Savannah. Courtney. Peyton.

The three sisters grew up not knowing their father and not quite catching a break.
But it looks like their luck is about to change when they find out the secret identity of their long-lost dad — a billionaire Las Vegas hotel owner who wants them to come live in a gorgeous penthouse hotel suite.
Suddenly the Strip's most exclusive clubs are all-access, and with an unlimited credit card each, it should be easier than ever to fit right in.
But in a town full of secrets and illusion, fitting in is nothing compared to finding out the truth about their past.

Michelle's SECRET DIAMOND SISTERS facts...

Fact #1: Savannah's birthday is on December 13th, which is the same day that Michelle got the call from Harlequin Teen that they wanted to publish THE SECRET DIAMOND SISTERS.

Fact #2: Savannah and Evie's friendship is based off a friendship that Michelle had in high school.

MY REVIEW

The Secret Diamond Sisters are no longer a secret!
Michelle Madow made an impression on me with her indie debut of the Transcend Series - I automatically knew that she was an author to keep an eye on and that I would definitely be reading whatever she would release next! It is exciting to see how far she has come - and I really looked forward to diving into her latest book filled with teen drama set in Las Vegas!
However, I have a few mixed feelings about this book...
the teen part of me says one thing - it's fun! A book filled with what teens would do in the situations that these characters go through - clearly the choices that they have made is to be expected. I must learn from them. And continue to enjoy the story and live vicariously through them; but then the adult/mom part of me is saying - no. I don't want to see this teen do this. Please stop making poor choices. I want to hug you all and make it all better.
This book was clearly written and meant purely for a teen audience. An audience that can relate more to all of the characters, have fun with them, but also, hopefully, learn from their mistakes too.

Due to their mother having to go to rehab for alcoholism, the three Diamond sisters - Peyton, Courtney and Savannah, must leave their modest hometown and lives to go meet and stay with their estranged father. Having no idea who their father is or what they are about to get into, each sister has their own way on how to deal with the oncoming situation. For the last few years, they have had to take care of themselves and each other - once they arrive on their father's doorstep, the shocking revelation of who he is does not go over too well.
Savannah, the youngest sister at 15, is the most easygoing of the three. As soon as she finds out that their father is THE hotel mogul billionaire of Las Vegas, she is quick to embrace her new life and dive into all the things that she didn't have before - expensive clothes, makeup, popularity, etc. All she wants to do is fit in with the right group of people - the gorgeous popular kids. And at that age, what kid didn't wish for a billionaire parent, to have all their wishes come true and be one of the cool kids in school with the perfect gorgeous boyfriend. I know that there were plenty of times that I had wanted this. Savannah is young and naive. She knows what is right and wrong, but it can be difficult to make decisions when peer pressure is looming at every corner every minute of the day.
Courtney, the middle child at 16, is a sweet and innocent bookworm. She is very focused, a rule-following and determined girl. Her mind is set on being an overachiever so she can earn a scholarship to go to the college of her dreams. She is also a very hard worker and is willing to continue to earn her way and does not want to take advantage of her father's wealth and seemingly generosity. Courtney tries to reason with everyone even though she does not like confrontation. But she has to do her best to meet her fathers rules, it is hard for her to let go of her responsibilities and embrace finally being a teen. But she too is still young and naive and has not had many experiences with her peers. Trying to follow her heart and meet her father's expectations prove to be very difficult for her in more ways than one.
Peyton, the oldest at 17, is a rebellious one. Having to be the one in charge of their mother and protecting her sisters has really taken its toll on her. She has the most difficult time in accepting anything that is happening and chooses to do the exact opposite of what everyone expects from her. Her promiscuity wasn't surprising, but at the same time, it was. It seems that Peyton doesn't think things through and is always quick to do the wrong thing to prove a point. As she slowly starts to take the time to really pay attention to what is going on around her, and realizes all of her mistakes - it was quite the eye-opener. My heart ached for her. This poor girl clearly needs some adult guidance in her life.
They all do.

And yes, there are plenty of cute boys for everyone - good and bad. Madow teases us with potential love triangles for each sister. I said potential! I can see things going either way...

I truly enjoy Madow's writing; she has such a way of describing things, making you feel like you're really there seeing things in person. And I feel that she mastered the art of the introductory first book to a series! There is so much potential as to how the story could go for each sister and for a few of the supporting characters too. I am really looking forward to seeing these girls mature, grow and make a few more mistakes on their journey to self-discovery!

*I received an eARC from the publisher for an honest review. All thoughts are my own.

"Waiting On Wednesday" is a weekly meme hosted by  Breaking the Spine.

What I'm waiting on...

ROOMS
by Lauren Oliver
Expected release date: September 23rd, 2014
Published by: Ecco (HarperCollins)
Genre: Adult - Contemporary Paranormal
Format: Hardcover, eBook

SUMMARY

A novel narrated by two ghosts that inhabit the walls of an old house.

Lauren Oliver makes her adult debut with this mesmerizing story in a tale of family, ghosts, secrets, and mystery, in which the lives of the living and the dead intersect in shocking, surprising, and moving ways.

Wealthy Richard Walker has just died, leaving behind his country house full of rooms packed with the detritus of a lifetime. His estranged family—bitter ex-wife Caroline, troubled teenage son Trenton, and unforgiving daughter Minna—have arrived for their inheritance.

But the Walkers are not alone. Prim Alice and the cynical Sandra, long dead former residents bound to the house, linger within its claustrophobic walls. Jostling for space, memory, and supremacy, they observe the family, trading barbs and reminiscences about their past lives. Though their voices cannot be heard, Alice and Sandra speak through the house itself—in the hiss of the radiator, a creak in the stairs, the dimming of a light bulb.

The living and dead are each haunted by painful truths that will soon surface with explosive force. When a new ghost appears, and Trenton begins to communicate with her, the spirit and human worlds collide—with cataclysmic results.

EXCERPT

~Friday the 13th~

I have no idea how much time passes before a loud honking snaps me out of my reverie. Ezra’s car pulls into the driveway, stopping just feet away. I can see him and Charlotte through the windshield, both grinning at me.

Ezra revs the engine and leans out the open driver’s side window. “Got your permit on you?”

“It’s in the house. Why?”

“Oh, you know…” His arm swings down to pat the door. “I just thought maybe you’d want to take her for a little spin.”

My heart leaps into my throat. “It’s not nice to tease, Ezra Rhodes.”

“Who says I’m teasing?” He lifts his sunglasses, settling them on top of his head and looking at me with eyes full of laughter. “If you can get your permit and be back here in two minutes, I’ll let you drive.”

I don’t even think about it; I grab my bag and run for the house. I fumble my keys from the side pocket as I run up the porch stairs, hearing the car doors opening behind me, and Ezra and Charlotte chuckling. I dump my bag the second I’m through the door and run as fast as I can upstairs, grabbing my permit from the desk drawer.

When I get back outside, Ezra has Charlotte backed up against the passenger side of the car, his hands entwined in her hair and his mouth practically devouring hers.

“Guys, seriously?” I ask, bending at the waist to catch my breath.

They pull apart slowly and Ezra opens the back passenger door for Charlotte. Her eyes meet mine for a second and I almost laugh when I see how glazed they are. I know I shouldn’t think these things about my sister’s boyfriend, but Ezra does look like a really good kisser. I’d probably be glassy-eyed and goofy-smiled after being kissed like that too.

Once he closes Charlotte’s door, Ezra opens the front passenger door and climbs in. “You coming?”

I run to the driver’s side and slide in behind the wheel. Before I do anything else, I glance at Ezra, waiting for him to tell me it was a joke or decide he doesn’t trust me enough to drive his precious Impala. I’m suddenly incredibly nervous, and I swallow hard, waiting for him to speak.

“What do you do first?” His voice is calm and there’s something in his eyes—faith? Reassurance?—that makes me want to just break down and cry, but I don’t. I can’t. He and Charlotte would think I’m losing it.

Without a word, I adjust the seat so I can reach the pedals, lower the steering wheel, check the side and rearview mirrors, and then fasten my seatbelt. “Right?”

“Gold star.” He grins at me, and for the millionth time in the last few weeks I think how freaking lucky my sister is to have found a guy like him.

“Are you sure about this?” I know I should keep my mouth shut in case he really does change his mind, but I need to be sure.

“If I can let Charlotte drive the Impala, I have no problem with you driving it.”

“Hey.” Charlotte reaches forward to smack his arm, but he dodges it, chuckling. “It’s true, though,” she says to me. “The first time he let me drive was late at night on a pitch dark road when I was still terrified of driving. And you know how jerky I still am. He has burn marks from the seatbelt because I’ve slammed on the brakes so many times. At least you know what you’re doing.”

I stifle a laugh. Ezra’s been teaching Charlotte to drive for the last few weeks. I got my permit as soon as I turned sixteen, but Charlotte had no interest in driving. She said we lived in a huge city where she could get anywhere she wanted on the subway, bus, train, or by foot, but once we moved to Angel Island, all those choices were taken away. Ezra loaned her his mother’s old bicycle, and then eventually started giving her driving lessons.

She confided in me a couple weeks ago that part of the reason she didn’t want to drive was because Mom was supposed to teach her but then she got too sick. Now she’s kind of uneasy behind the wheel but Ezra’s really patient with her, and Dad’s taken her out a few times too.

“Okay then,” I say, putting the car in reverse. “Let’s do this.”

Twenty minutes later I’ve gone down at least a dozen side roads and we’re back on the main street a few minutes from our house. I was nervous at first, my hands clenched on the wheel at ten and two, but when Ezra turned the volume up on the radio, I relaxed. Between the music, the sound of Charlotte and Ezra’s voices and laughter, and the fresh lake air that blows in through the open windows, I’m in heaven.

“I think Friday the thirteenth will be my lucky day from now on,” I say, raising my voice to be heard over the wind and Bono’s voice as he belts out ‘Where the Streets Have No Name’. “It’s been a pretty damn perfect day.”

MY THOUGHTS

The cover is heartwarming and definitely gives me a glimpse as to what to expect in this companion novel.
I love it!
I have yet to read WAITING FOR THE STORM - but I did just purchase it for .99 and am really looking forward to finally getting comfy and diving into Angel Island and learning more about the O'Dell sisters!!!
