Relaunch Blitz: BLUE SKY DAYS by Marie Landry (YA)

by Marie Landry
Release date: January 17th, 2012
Published by: Self-Published
Genre: Young Adult Contemporary
Format: eBook

SUMMARY

A year after graduating from high school, nineteen-year-old Emma Ward feels lost. She has spent most of her life trying to please her frigid, miserable mother - studying hard, getting good grades, avoiding the whole teenage rebellion thing - and now she feels she has no identity beyond that. Because she spent so many years working hard and planning every moment of her life, she doesn't have any friends, has never had a boyfriend, and basically doesn't know who she is or what she really wants from life. Working two part-time jobs to save money for college hasn't helped her make decisions about her future, so she decides it's time for a change. She leaves home to live with her free-spirited, slightly eccentric Aunt Daisy in a small town that makes Emma feel like she's stepped back in time.
When Emma meets Nicholas Shaw, everything changes - he's unlike anyone she's ever met before, the kind of man she didn't even know existed in the 21st century. Carefree and spirited like Daisy, Nicholas teaches Emma to appreciate life, the beauty around her, and to just let go and live. Between Daisy and Nicholas, Emma feels like she belongs somewhere for the first time in her life, and realizes that you don't always need a plan - sometimes life steers you where you're meant to be.
Life is wonderful, an endless string of blue sky days, until Nicholas is diagnosed with cancer, and life changes once again for Emma in ways she never thought possible. Now it's time for her to help Nicholas the way he's helped her. Emma will have to use her new-found strength, and discover along the way if love really is enough to get you through.

June 27th is the 20th anniversary of my dad’s death from leukemia. For a long time I’ve wanted to honour him in some way, and I thought having the relaunch of Blue Sky Days, a book that was partly inspired by him, would be the perfect tribute. My dad was a wonderful man—smart, funny, kind, and loyal. He was an amazing father, husband, brother, and friend. Even before he died, I knew I wanted to be a writer, and he would listen to my crazy made-up stories with the patience of a saint.
From the 27th-30th of June, half the proceeds from all sales of Blue Sky Days will be donated to the Canadian Cancer Society. If you already own a copy, maybe you’d consider buying the book for a friend or family member? Or buying another copy from a different retailer (like Smashwords, which offers the book in every format)?

I greatly appreciate the support of the online reading/writing community for helping me honour my dad.

Thanks to eight incredible sponsors, there's a huge blitz-wide giveaway!
There will be three (3) $20 PayPal cash prizes.
Three chances to win - not too shabby, huh?

Blog Tour (Exclusive Excerpt and Giveaway): VAMPIRE TROUBLE (Dead in the City #2) by Sara Humphreys (A)

Dead in the City #2
by Sara Humphreys
Expected release date: July 1st, 2014
Published by: Sourcebooks Casablanca
Genre: Adult Paranormal
Format: Paperback, eBook

SUMMARY

Shane Quesada, a four-century old vampire sentry, is known for cold, unemotional precision when hunting rogue vampires.

Maya Robertson is a youngling vampire who will not be controlled — and to prove it, she rejects Shane’s protection — only to find herself in over her head with an alpha werewolf.

Soon, a war between the coven and the werewolf clan ignites, and Maya and Shane flee to Louisiana, where their passion for each other grows — as does Maya’s power. When she finds herself at the center of the conflict, will she finally trust Shane with her life —
and her heart?

EXCLUSIVE EXCERPT #10

“You’re killing me, woman.” Doug linked his arm around her waist and kissed her cheek, which had her smiling wistfully. “You have got to come back to bed and get some rest.”
“Fine,” Olivia said, feigning an angry tone. She looked back at Shane and gave him a sad smile. “Whatever you do, Shane, go easy. Maya may act tough, but it’s all bullshit. Which is one reason I’m less than thrilled she’s going to work for Rat.”
“No she’s not.” Shane folded his arms over his chest and ignored the smirk on Doug’s face. “I will not allow it.”
“Good luck with that ‘not allowing it’ shit, man.” Doug shook his head. Linking Olivia’s fingers in his, he started pulling her toward their apartment. “That’s a surefire way to piss off any woman, human or vampire.”
“It’s not up to you, Shane, or me,” Olivia said. “Maya is not my property—she’s my family. She’s got every intention of starting work at Rat’s club tomorrow night, and as you know, I gave her my reluctant blessing.” Shane opened his mouth to protest, but Olivia held up one hand, silencing him. “I am letting her do this because I’m assigning you as her personal babysitter. If it will make you feel better, you can tell her that you’re her bodyguard. And I’m only doing this because the wolves will be hanging out there, okay?”
“Good move, babe.” Doug tried to pull her down the hall, but she held her ground. “Shane can handle Maya. After all, she’s a youngling and he’s older than dirt.”
Shane ignored the jab because Doug was even younger than Maya. His angel bloodline and the bloodmate bond with Olivia had not only made his transformation seamless, but had also fast-tracked all of his abilities. Doug may have been turned only a few months ago, but he was one of the most powerful vampires Shane had ever met. “I already told her that was the deal, and she’s about as happy about it as you would expect.”
“What about my sentry patrols?” Shane asked out of duty, not because he wanted to be away from Maya. “We can’t leave the city unprotected.”
“Doug can handle things,” Olivia said with a wink to her mate. “Besides, the big concern is the wolves, and they’ll be hanging out at The Dollhouse. We kill two birds with one stone. You can keep an eye on Maya and the wolves at the same time.”
“Bed.” Doug swept Olivia off her feet as she shrieked in protest. “Now.”
“Remember what I said, Shane,” Olivia shouted through a laugh while Doug carried her away. “And don’t let her out of your sight around those wolves.”
Shane watched the czars disappear down the hallway, with Van and Oreo close behind, and his thoughts immediately went to Maya. He opened the door to his apartment and stepped inside, and when the door closed shut behind him, Shane marveled at the silence. His gaze flicked around the large studio apartment with a new perspective. The place was decorated in shades of gray, void of all color, but this was the first time Shane felt the dullness.
Shedding his clothes, he made his way to the queen-size bed, still unmade from the day before, and slipped between the sheets with one thing on his mind—Maya. If he got pulled into Maya’s

dreamscape again, he would do a hell of a lot more than watch. He drifted into a quiet slumber, and as his eyes fluttered closed, Shane hoped for the first time in centuries to dream.

Blog Tour (Review): DEADWOOD by Kell Andrews (MG)

http://gcrpromotions.blogspot.com/2014/06/deadwood-by-kell-andrews-blog-tour.html

by Kell Andrews
Release date: June 24th, 2014
Published by: Spencer Hill Press
Genre: Middle Grade
Format: Paperback
Format read: A paperback from the publisher for an honest review.

SUMMARY

Sometimes a lucky ritual becomes a curse. Seventh-grader Martin Cruz hates his rotten new town, Lower Brynwood, but with his mom fighting a war in Afghanistan, he has no other choice but to live with his crazy aunt. Then he gets a message from a tree telling him it's cursed--and so is he.

It's not just any tree either, it's the Spirit Tree, an ancient beech the football team carves for good luck before the season opener. But every year they lose. Now the Spirit Tree is dying, and the other trees in the park are toppling around it like dominoes. The town is plagued with unexplainable accidents and people begin to fade, drained of life. Martin must team up with a know-it-all soccer star, Hannah Vaughan, if he has any chance of breaking the curse.

If they fail to save the Spirit Tree, it could mean the destruction of Lower Brynwood and a permanent case of bad luck.

MY REVIEW

A fast-paced, enjoyable, contemporary fantasy that upper middle graders will truly enjoy!

Martin is a strong, determined teen who was sent to live with his mother's cousin while she's deployed. Martin does his best to stay out of his "Aunt" Michele's way, and tries to get by on her strict regimes of eating healthy and living life to their full "brain-power" potential. He's a runner and trains as often as he can, determined to complete any marathon as long as his mother can do it with him.
On his first run through Lower Brynwood aka Deadwood, he runs into a group of people performing a school ritual on a tree. He is angered that they've been damaging this poor tree for many years and tries to stop it - but what can one little teen do against a whole high school football team?
After they're done, Martin is left alone with the tree and meets Hannah. Hannah is a tomboyish girl who has lived in Lower Brynwood her whole life and knows all about the Spirit Tree and most of what happens in the town. While they're standing under the tree, an unexpected storm drops in and lightening hits the tree. While they stare at the tree and watch it light up from the inside, the carvings start to light up, letter by letter, delivering a message to them. An unbelievable scary message - the town is cursed.

Against their will, Martin and Hannah team up to figure out the Spirit Tree's message, why its dying? Why are there other trees in the town are dying too? Why is the town and its occupants are cursed?

The story is told from three different perspectives, Martin's, Hannah's and the Spirit Tree. Reading from the tree's perspective was extremely interesting, it gives insight to how a tree would view its surroundings and history. I really enjoyed that aspect a lot.

The perfect blend of relatable contemporary, supernatural elements, mystery and environmental awareness - an amazing middle grade book for all ages to read!

(I received this paperback from the publisher/tour host for an honest review.
My thoughts are my own.)

SUMMARY

Gage was the first guy I ever wanted. He was my first crush and my first fantasy, but he wasn't my first in any other way because he never saw me as anything more than a friend —
at least not until the night that changed everything.

It was all Gage's fault.
He insisted we drive through the storm and take the back roads. By the time the storm hit full force we had no chance. One night of snowbound sex changed our relationship forever. The problem was at the same time I caught another guy’s attention.

This other guy happens to be the alpha of a pack of shifter wolves.

MY THOUGHTS

Everything - the cover, summary - amazing!!!
I'm really looking forward to starting a new series by this author!

Review: THE POUT-POUT FISH GOES TO SCHOOL by Deborah Diesen (C)

by Deborah Diesen
Illustrated by Dan Hanna
Release date: June 24th, 2014
Published by: Farrar, Straus and Giroux (Macmillan)
Genre: Children (2yo+)
Format: Hardcover (Board/Picture Book)
Format read: ARC received from the publisher for an honest review.

SUMMARY

Turn little pouts into big smiles!

Mr. Fish is nervously awaiting his first day of school, and he frets about not knowing how to write his name, how to draw shapes, and how to do math —
until he’s reassured that school is the perfect place to learn how to master all of these new skills,
in this new Pout-Pout Fish book from Deborah Diesen and Dan Hanna.

OUR REVIEW

Pout-Pout Fish does it again, and now he's going to school!
A funny little rhyming game that Mr. Fish plays with himself that encourages your child to discuss why they are hesitant about starting school.

Mr. Fish is scared and worried he is not ready for school. He does not know where to go and finds himself in different classrooms trying different things, like writing and math, that he does not know how to do. This overwhelms him and he gets upset because he does not know how to do these things yet and he wants to leave school.
His teacher finds him and explains that when you're a new fishie, you're not suppose to know these things yet. You start in a classroom that will help you and one day you will learn how to write, do math, and much more. Don't be discouraged, just try and you'll succeed.

I have to admit, the beginning of the book felt a little discouraging. But, we must remember, Mr. Fish is a pouty fish that sees the negatives first and needs help seeing the positives to in order to turn his frowny face upside down! Like most little kids around the age 3-5, they want to do so much, but because they are so little, they get discouraged very easily and need all the guidance and support that they can get. Mr. Fish and his teacher are sure to give them a much needed boost in realizing that they're not alone and that they will get to where they want to.

Again, the illustrations are wonderfully done in a mystical underwater setting that is fun and relatable. Adorable as always! Looking forward to more books in the near future.

BOOK TRAILER

OUR REVIEW

Adorable, short, sweet and little baby hands friendly! Pout-Pout Fish is a new favorite in this house!

My older boys, 8 and 10 years old, found Pout-Pout Fish to be quite amusing. They enjoyed the simple story and amazing illustrations. And the trailer, is quite catchy. They have been singing it non-stop for their baby brother for weeks now.
My youngest is almost 8 months old - the board book is small enough for him to sit with and easily flip the pages. He stares and giggles, especially when we read the one line sentences on each page with a funny voice to fit Mr. Fish's mood.

What I love most about Deborah Diesen's books is that they're so easy for small children to follow along and remember. After a few reads they're sure to memorize the story and can follow along by pointing to the words, helping them to learn how to read at an earlier age.
We also love Dan Hanna's whimsical pictures that fit the story perfectly without too much detail or overwhelming colors.

Remember, no matter what, you can always make a pouty face smile - especially with Mr. Fish around!
